“All in our thoughts, you were for us… So we sang: “Our glory has come -forever we are freeSoon, we’ll shine again!” And everyone would laugh with all their hearts. -We never knew we were all heading for the doom…”

Like a worm, you have sunk your teeth deep into the soul of our treasury, Crept upon our men on their beds and inflicted your venom upon them. In your thin-heartedness, you have drained the emotion and conscience of our people and taught them to tear their brothers, To pursue their ambitions tirelessly, closing their eyes to the name of mercy and shutting their doors against compassion. In my fury, I won’t confront the men you have brainwashed now but you, cos you are the root of all their evil! The nation is yet in her prime, yet like a worm you have eaten deep into the brains of her statesmen. Now you have heated up yourself to gain more strength, poured out yourself as a drink of sorrow, a drink of bitterness, a drink of hatred to our leaders and yet, in the closeness of their hearts, They are drinking happily, joyfully, not knowing that the wine they drink are worms of scorn and mockery. But alas… it was just like yesterday, When our men accepted you to teach them to manage their wealth, To teach them in building their nation, To teach them ‘be more responsible. Like a long awaited prince, our men clothed you in kingly robes, -kept and meant only for the fathers of our land – Our National Heroes whose names are forever imprinted in the hearts of the people and the yet unborn. Our women gave you the richest honour on a million knees, And our children all gave you their best of smiles.

Only for our men who had spent all their days, Laughing and dining with you to be stabbed on their backs! What a pain! Eulogies, honour not given to our fathers were showered on you -But see what you have made us. Instead of beauty, you have given us ashes. Instead of laughing, the people are mourning and cursing. You amassed wealth for yourself and raised up men to do the same. Now you have displaced humanity in the heart of our leaders And shattered the trust and confidence we had in them. Only the “veery” strong ones, Who have vowed with all their heart, Who have solely taken the people as their people, Who have hidden the nation’s anthem in their hearts, Who have solidly held on to remember the struggles …and passions of our fore fathers, Who are bent on serving the people with their heart and might, Remain unshaken at the seductive call of this wine… With no other name but CORRUPTION. But listen! O yes… Your name has been inscribed in our history O yes… You have prided yourself in your abundance and in the number of men you have won. But give ear… We are not done yet!

Just as you have spitted on our faces, Our young men are coming to you with chains in their hands and strength in their arms to bind you up! Our hunters are coming with guns on their shoulders for your beastly head! And our gardeners are ready to stump you out of our dignified soil! Soon, you shall be forgotten on this land… Cos we are determined to see our nation transformed And our people, smile again! I believe in Nigeria.
