Canned Food Drive

Every year Scappoose School District collects donations of canned goods to help support our families. The district collaborates with the Scappoose Kiwanis Club and the fire department in a program called Share and Care. Last year, we gathered over 2,000 canned food items. The program assisted over 235 families in Scappoose. The schools that participate in the canned food drive focus on working with our students on the importance of helping our community and the joy of giving to those in need. The schools use leadership groups to help spread the word and create community awareness. Grant Watts, Warren Elementary, Petersen, and Scappoose Middle School setup school wide goals. When these goals are met, staff or certain staff members will do something silly for the students. Last year, Warren had its 3 a bright color. Scappoose Middle School principal and school counselor dye their hair 3 got to duck tape their principal to a wall. The canned food drive will begin in December and end on December 16th. Each school might vary on the exact start date. We are looking for canned food items like soup, vegetables, fruit, meat, peanut butter, chili, and cereal. Perishable items, like turkey, must be donated directly to the fire department or Kiwanis. They will give you a receipt for your perishable item so it can be counted towards your school’s goal. Some schools will count turkeys as multiple items. December 16th & 17th, Kiwanis will be organizing the food items at the high school. They are always looking for volunteers for those two days. If you or someone you know is in need of the Share and Care program, forms are available at St. Vincent De Paul Food Bank in Scappoose or at Scappoose Fire District after November 14th. You may also get in touch with your child’s school counselor to be referred. Scappoose School District is looking forward to another year of helping our community.
