ICAE hospitality training programs and qualification A Nationally Recognised Qualification

ICAE hospitality training programs are straightforward to complete, and are valuable to any hospitality professional. On completion of the program, you will receive a Nationally Recognised Qualification which is recognised throughout Australia and many other parts of the world. If you leave the program before you complete, you will receive a Statement of Attainment listing all the units you have successfully completed; these units will be recognised if you wish to continue training at a later date at ICAE or any other RTO in Australia.

Doing the Course Domestic students

Generally your ICAE trainer will deliver training and assessment at your workplace, during work time, as negotiated with your employer and ICAE. To assist you achieve your qualification as quickly as possible, your trainer will guide you through the assessment process during workplace visits.

International students

International students attend the ICAE campus for a minimum of 20 scheduled hours per week for one semester, followed by one semester of Industry Placement when students undertake paid or unpaid work for up to 45 hours per week. More information about ICAE’s unique international programs can be found on page 5.

Demonstrating your competence

ICAE courses require us to collect “evidence of competence”. The Government’s Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) sets the skill and knowledge requirements - the “competencies” - for each unit, and also determine which units make up a qualification. Evidence of competence usually includes a mixture of knowledge and skills. When ICAE have collected all the required evidence of competence for a unit, you will receive a “Competent” result for that unit. When you have received a Competent result for all the required units, you will receive your qualification. ICAE collects evidence using a range of methods: written online assignments, including short answer questions and projects; observing you at work; and assessing examples of your work (budgets and reports for example). If you don’t get something right the first time, you have further opportunities to either re-submit the work, or be observed again, depending on the situation. Your ICAE trainer will let you know how you are progressing, and what you need to do, at all times. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is another way of completing a unit or a qualification, in which you are required to provide your own evidence of competence, gained in ways other than formal training, for every

requirement in a unit or qualification. Submitting an RPL application is usually a very time consuming exercise for applicants, as you need to map every required competency to a demonstrated and verifiable prior learning experience. Many students, even those with significant workplace experience, find it easier to simply complete the theory work online and have their skills assessed through workplace observation.

Accessing Your Learning Resources

All of the learning resources and theory assessments required for this qualification are available to students online through ICAE’s online learning platform, provided to students free of charge. To access the platform, students just require an internet-connected computer. Each student is provided with a unique login to the system, enabling access to their learning materials and assessments 24/7/365. The information is engaging, interactive, and reflects current best practice in the Australian hospitality industry.

Support from ICAE

An ICAE Teacher will deliver face-to-face instruction, guide you through the assessments, and conduct workplace observations according to your training plan. ICAE teachers are contactable through your online learning  platform, via email, and on the phone. As much as possible we endeavour to utilise your own workplace as a learning and assessment resource for you to draw on. We will also ensure that the skills and knowledge you gain are transferrable to other venues and situations, so that your qualification is completely portable. ● ● ● ● ●

These courses maximise time spent working in industry, based on real skills and knowledge gained in the classroom. ICAE’s focus on providing all students with vocational outcomes extends to our international programs, which all incorporate an equal mix of classroom study and paid (or unpaid if desired) Industry Placement. If students wish to be paid while on Industry Placement, ICAE will assist in finding an appropriate employer that can provide the necessary environment to develop and demonstrate the necessary skills as required by the course. Students undertaking paid Industry Placement receive the same pay and conditions as Australian residents and can earn up to AUD$1,000 per week working up to 45 hours per week. Students who prefer to undertake unpaid Industry Placement will be placed by ICAE into a suitable venue for a minimum of 25 hours per week, where they will develop and demonstrate the necessary skills as required by the course.

Curriculum and certification

ICAE’s international programs contain the same learning and assessment resources as our domestic programs, ensuring that all our students receive the same high quality education. Our state of the art online learning platform allows students to access their assessments and interactive learning material wherever and whenever internet access is available. Students can access wireless broadband throughout the campus. International programs have two 20-week semesters per year, with intakes in January and July. Students’ first semester is spent attending classes at our campus for a minimum of 20 hours per week. In this tuition semester, students undertake theory and practical instruction, and complete knowledge-based assessments. Students’ second semester is spent in Industry Placement, when work in an approved hospitality enterprise and do not attend classes. ICAE teachers visit the student in the workplace regularly, providing support and guidance, and to conduct workplace assessments. Industry Placement is the student’s opportunity to demonstrate that they can apply their skills and knowledge in a real workplace - an invaluable addition to any resume, and a very important part of building a professional network of employers. All international programs are accredited and approved by the Australian Government, and graduates receive a Nationally Recognised Qualification that is recognised throughout Australia and overseas.
