“Current crisis and issue of democracy in the Mediterranean as they affect matters of gender” Hemicycle Marseille Provence Metropolis Pharo Palace Saturday 6 April 2013 Euro Mediterranean symposium organized by the RUSEMEG (Association for the Euro Mediterranean Academic and scientific Network on gender and women- RUS)

Summary of the symposium – Second International encounter between researchers organised by the RUS, this symposium launched the pilot project of an academic and scientific Euro Mediterranean network on gender and women. This network is meant to be the knowledge cluster of the Euro Mediterranean Developing Women Empowerment project, labelled by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), which prefigures the future Euro Mediterranean Women Foundation whose creation should be announced at the forthcoming UfM summit. The symposium was preceded by the meeting of the RUSEMEG executive Board that broadened the original Board, established by the constituent General Assembly of the 7th December 2012, with the election of 4 new members coming from Moroccan, Tunisian, Algerian and Spanish Universities or research Labs. Held on a day, the symposium counted with conferences by nine Euro Mediterranean academics working in the field of gender and gender equality and with the attendance of numerous NGO’s representatives and gender activists from the Region of Marseilles. The different speeches analysed the situation of women in the south Mediterranean countries after the uprisings of the Arab spring and the parallel situation of European women subjected to the current economic and democratic crisis in Europe. The symposium was opened by the secretary general of the French interdepartmental delegation for the Mediterranean, Nathalie Pilhes, and closed by Fatma Lalem, deputy mayor of Paris and representing the French Ministry for women rights to the Anna Lindh Forum. Yvonne Kniebilher, French pioneer of the research on motherhood and women, originator of the Research Laboratory on gender GeFEM and member of the Mediterranean House of human sciences in Aix-en-Provence (MMSH), chaired the symposium as honorary president. The moderator was Hager Ben Sheik, jurist and journalist from Tunisia.
