Storybook Illustration
drawing and painting class for children ages 6+
I’m thrilled to offer a new course, Storybook Illustration 1. Students will learn the fundamentals of writing and illustration in a fun, positive environment. We talk through the storyboarding process so the child can plan out the sequence of his story in words and images. After the story is written, she works on the illustrations, learning different drawing and watercolor techniques along the way. At the end I scan the paintings into the computer, layout the book digitally, type in the text, and send to the printer. Holding and reading through the completed book brings such satisfaction for all! Children have such wonderful imaginations, and I love to see the joy that comes from seeing their ideas develop on the page! We meet for one hour every week for ten weeks in my home. (I live in San Jose on Playa del Rey near Oakridge Mall.) Parents are certainly welcome to stay if they like, though many choose to drop off and pick up an hour later. Details: Four –- six students per class // teacher-developed curriculum // $250 covers class, all drawing and painting materials, and one printed book, addittional books are $20 each // first fall class starting Thurs. Sept. 3 from 10-1 1 am, other days and times may be available // contact the teacher (

About the Teacher Suzanne Hodson } Graphic Designer, Illustrator & Photographer One of my favorite childhood memories is taking watercolor and acrylic painting classes. In 2008 I completed my Architecture degree at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and I am thankful for all the visual communication, design, and photography classes that prepared me for a career in the creative arts. In my college years, I worked part time in the art department of a publishing company and discovered the joy of holding my published illustrations and book covers in hand. It’s so much fun! I have worked the last 6 years in San Jose as a graphic designer but cut back on office hours when my daugther was born. She is almost five now and the inspiration for the Storybook Illustration class. We love to make up stories and paint together. Eventually we included her friends, and they loved it too. That’s how it all started!
