Stalks carry food made in the leaves to the roots and other parts. Roots absorb water and nutrients, and they anchor the plant in the soil. Plants need air, water, light, space, and nutrients to survive. Plants use light, air, water, and nutrients to make their own food. A plant’s stalk (stem) and leaves grow toward light. Plants and animals inherit traits, or characteristics, from their parents. Organisms in an environment have adaptations that allow the organisms to survive in that environment. Earth has different environments including oceans, deserts, forests, mountains, tundra, and prairies. Organisms in an environment have adaptations that allow the organisms to survive in that environment. An adaptation could be part of an organism’s body, or it could be a behavior that could help it survive. All animals need food, shelter, and water in order to survive. Plants also have special adaptations that help them survive.
