CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE FAMILY ENGAGEMENT: ENGAGING ALL FAMILES How does a family’s culture impact their child’s learning? For schools across the nation, it is becoming more challenging to connect with the increasingly diverse student population and their families. The family unit has changed dramatically not only from an ethnic diversity standpoint, also socioeconomic status and family structure. A "One-Size-Fits-All" approach to engaging with families doesn't work. Understanding the role of culture in a family’s life is key to unlocking the door and removing barriers to engaging families.
Effective family engagement is a shared responsibility - this means that the schools and other community organizations need to be confident and committed to engaging families in meaningful ways. Families need to be confident and committed to actively supporting their children’s learning and development. This workshop will discuss effective school-family engagement, with a clear vision of family engagement for educators. A variety of family cultures will be covered including Latino/Hispanic culture, values, religion and gender roles.
