Catechism of the Catholic Church: On Sundays & other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord's Day, the performance of the works of mercy, & the appropriate relaxation of mind & body./ Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest./ The faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, & health. [CCC 2185].

From the Pastor’s Desk Dear All Saints & St. John Parishioners, Thank you to all who donated to ASCS in Give 2 Grow 2017 last Thursday. Grocery Grab Raffle by the Holdrege Rotary is underway. I have tickets. $10 for one. $5 for each additional. 5 for $25. Drawing Dec. 8. Event Saturday, Dec. 9. You can have a substitute shopper. Proceeds for Back Pack Blessings & Rotary Foundation. Thank you to all who were part of the success of BLAZE-OPOLY. Thank you to the parents & staff & all supporters who worked to make it a success. Thank you to all who attended, all who donated and all who prayed. Thank you to Jerry Cramer for painting the partition walls in the All Saints restrooms. Thank you to Carquest/Mark Andrijeski for donating the paints used. Thank you to Jeremy Ham & Doug Stevenson for installing the refurbished partitions. We have received the 2018 Liturgical Calendar used for scheduling Masses. Please consider requesting Masses. You can request a specific date and time. Requests will be honored on a first come basis. Mass Intentions & stipends are needed at All Saints. We have not had many funerals lately. Other priests throughout the diocese & the world need Mass intentions too. For the Lincoln Diocese $10 is the usual Mass stipend. A Daily Mass Intention stipend is part of the priest’s monetary support. Thank you. Mural Artist Corbert Gauthier has painted many of the secondary figures in white robes. The 2nd figure from the arch to the North is St. Maria Goretti– the relic we have in the altar. If you want a tour stay after Masses & I will take you through my office. You can look in the “cry room” windows also. The mural central figures are mostly done. Once all of the figures are painted and glazed a thin varnish will be painted over the entire mural. Pray for this work.

Pray for the St. John– Smithfield planning for a fellowship hall. Travis Sund promised to call me but I have not heard about any progress from him yet. We will need the Diocese Building Commission approval & corp. resolution. Some parishioners need our prayers for health issues. Believe in the power of prayer. Interested in an Adult study of the Catholic Faith? Join us on Thursdays at All Saints Parish Hall at 7 PM. Brush up or learn anew. Meet new people. All welcome. Join the Prodigal Sons men at A.S. on Fridays 5:45am to 6:45am to watch a video reflection on the following Sundays readings & discuss them. Coffee & rolls too. All are welcome. CCD & GodTeens were given the opportunity to go to confession with the start of the academic year. They will have an opportunity to celebrate this sacrament again in preparation for Christmas over the next few Wednesdays. Fr. Lux will be the chaplain at PMHC this week. Please pray for this work. Pastor Stewart will sub for me. I will be gone for a couple days for Thanksgiving. I will leave after Mass on Thursday morning to visit family & friends. I will return on Saturday about Noon. Thank you to all who will put up & take down chairs each weekend. May God bless all of us. In Him, F r. Lux

Are You Registered? Did you know that demographic studies estimate that more than 1/3 of all Catholics are not registered in a parish? If you are not registered in our parish, please consider doing so. Also, please encourage your friends & family to register! Registering is important because: If a parish doesn’t know who is out there, how can it adequately serve the needs of all – especially singles, divorced or young families who may not see the need to register? When the services of the Church are needed - such as for a wedding, Baptism or funeral - it is easier if the person is registered. Registered parishioners receive helpful information about our parish including (list here the welcome and communication services that you provide.) Registering is easy. Simply find the parish nearest you, and contact their parish office today!

a high school that dug up a time capsule that students had buried twenty-five years earlier. They had buried it with the purpose of showing others many years later the trends of the day and how student life was at that time. It was a fun exercise and everyone—the current students as well as those now grown—laughed at the clothing styles, corny photos, and lack of technology from years ago. I wonder how the former students felt about how they had grown in those twenty-five years. How many of them realized their high school dreams? Did they find their purpose in this world and feel fulfilled in life? Did they use the talents and gifts God gave them to really make a difference in the world? We have all been given talents and gifts by God to be cultivated and offered back to him and those around us for his glory. As time has passed, hopefully we have taken seriously our stewardship of these gifts. But sometimes out of fear, misunderstanding, or even apathy, we have taken one or more of our gifts and buried them, hiding them away from others and stifling all growth. This is no way to honor God and certainly not a path to fulfillment in life. If we have anything buried in our backyard we might do well to dig it back up, clean it up, and begin building upon it. Like a time capsule, those things will not be buried forever. One day the giver of that gift will ask what you have done with it. When that day comes, I pray you don’t need to find a shovel. —Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
