EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS Ph.D. (2001) – Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, India. Title of the thesis- “Studies on the immunomodulatory activity of honey on antigenspecific humoral immune response in murine system”. Research Supervisor: Prof. Rao R Athota, Dept. of Biochemistry, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, India (Former Vice-chancellor of Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Anantapur) Research was conducted on honey for its possible influence on immune system to study immunomodulatory effects by inducing ovalbumin-specific immune response in murine system. The immune response is analyzed by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis, ELISA, double immunodiffusion and T cell proliferative response. The induction of immune response against OVA was inhibited by honey in mice and the suppressive activity was observed consistently in different haplotypes, using different allergens, and different sources of honeys. The dialysis and organic fractionation of honey and consequent examination of the fractions for the inhibitory activity reveal that a low and high molecular weight compounds are involved in exhibiting the suppressive activity on antibody response as well as T cell proliferation. By the results obtained, it is concluded that honey could induce suppression of anti-ovalbumin responses; therefore, it might be a useful anti-allergic agent.
