Mount Carbon Daily Watch DOG Notes and Schedule Be sure to watch the Volunteer Training video on our website BEFORE serving as Watch Dog.
DOGs, to begin, please note: • We have behavior procedures and expectations for our students that vary depending on which area of the building they are in - classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, playground, etc. We appreciate your honoring these rules and expectations and allow our staff - teachers, aides, office staff - to supervise and manage student behavior accordingly. • Anyone wishing to enter our building must ring the bell and wait to be let in. Do not open the door for anyone who appears to be waiting, even a student or someone you know. ONLY front office staff may manage people at the door. • Anyone who enters our building, who is not a staff member or student, MUST sign in in the front office and wear a visitor sticker. If you see someone without either a Jeffco badge or bright yellow visitor sticker, you may ask them, "Can I help you?" or "Excuse me, I don't see your visitor sticker/badge…Did you check in with the office?" If you are not comfortable with this, let the office know and we will follow-up. • ONLY staff members, not volunteers, are allowed to tend to student injuries or illnesses. Volunteers are to alert a staff member if a student needs attention. Volunteers are not to attempt to treat students.
This schedule is meant to give some direction to your day, however it is not required you follow it to a "t". 7:45 Check in with front office 1. Check in with office staff, collect walkie-talkie (channel 1) and name tag from the mailroom. 2. Purchase Watch DOG t-shirt; t-shirts identify you as a Watch DOG and are preferred, but optional. 3. Review Watch Dog binder, located on/in small desk just outside office in main hall.
7:45 - 8:10 Outside Duty during student arrival (if you arrive early enough) Walk the perimeter of the school to ensure the following: 1. Parents are properly dropping students off in the Hug-n-Go zones - no parking/waiting allowed in this area. • Parents need to promptly drop student off and then leave location for next car to drop off • Parents should not be completing u-turns on Youngfield Street If you see this, make note of license plate and car and driver description and provide to secretaries 2. Students are "walking their wheels". 3. Parents are not bringing dogs on school property; if you see this, kindly remind them of the rule: we ask that dogs remain off school grounds during student drop-off/pick-up due to their unpredictability. 4. Students are entering through end-of-pod doors, beginning at 8am, not playing or hanging out in groups.
8:10 Return to office with your student(s) to have your picture taken by Karri Burkhart Once completed, students should head to class for start-of-day activities.
8:20 If ordering a cafeteria lunch, see Krystina in the Kids' Café to place your order. 8:30 - 8:40 Perimeter Check 1. Walk the perimeter of the school checking to ensure all exterior doors are secure. 2. Walk the area behind the school checking around the sheds and trash areas. 3. Check the parking lot for anyone sitting in cars; if someone seems suspicious, note the license plate, make of car and contact office; do not approach the suspicious person.

9:00 - 10:45 Hallway Sweep, Classroom Visits and Optional 1. Visit classrooms throughout the building. 2. Deliver WATCH DOGS letter to student(s) whose father was the last DOG. • During the day, write a letter to your student, put it in an envelope and place it in the front cover pocket; the next scheduled Watch Dog will deliver your letter. 3. See Optional Section.
10:40 - 11 Monitor morning Kindergarten release/parent and daycare pick-up 11 - 12:50 Lunch and Recess 1. We encourage you to eat lunch with your student(s) and visit other students during this time. 2. Monitor student recess; you can monitor any recess, not just your own child’s. • Encourage age-appropriate recess games with students (see recess games sheets in binder for ideas). • Play and/or monitor football - it can get out of hand! 3. When you are not in the cafeteria or on the playground: • Patrol the exterior recess areas where students are exposed. • Make sure visiting adults have checked in, as they should have a visitor sticker/Jeffco badge. • Redirect adults walking on the green belt (path running along the fence on south end) to Youngfield; we do not allow “strangers” on school grounds during recess. • Monitor circle drive for parked cars and perimeter of school grounds and parking lot for any unusual behaviors/people; report any such behavior to front office.
12:50 - 2:15 Hallway Sweep, Classroom Visits, Perimeter Checks and Optional 2:35 - 3:00 Outside Patrol during student departure Walk the perimeter of the school and ensure students are safely leaving school grounds; same rules as drop-off.
