Danes have great confidence in the EU The Danes may have been more eurosceptic after this summer's debate on immigration law, but it is only a temporary trend, says Professor Ove Kaj Pedersen. Denmark is actually located at the top when it comes to confidence in EU institutions

Yet the Danes still happier EU. While only five percent of the Danish population in 1993 was confident the European Commission, the figure is now 32 percent. This places Denmark in first place among the European countries where the average confidence is only 20 percent. "If you look at the Council of Ministers, the Commission, the European Parliament, national governments and parliaments, there is a general positive trend where people both in Denmark and in Europe as such has gained increasing confidence in the European institutions, including the National parliaments in the EU context. Denmark, however, is clearly in the lead, "says Ove Kaj Pedersen, a professor at the Copenhagen Business School and coauthor of the current book European screw. Focus distrust The Berlingske Tidende yesterday was able to report that a survey conducted by Gallup indicate that a growing number of Danes after this summer's debate on the impact of immigration law has become less skeptical, call Ove Kaj Petersen for "quite expected". "This is the same trend that emerges every time there is political awareness of the EU, whether it's about national conflicts with the EU or a referendum on EU issues. Population skepticism rises every time," says Ove Kaj Pedersen . Looking at it over a longer period, the trend is towards a more positive attitude to the Union. So it is only in the very short term cyclical phases of political attention and conflicts that confidence going in a negative direction. "The negative trend that we have seen it over the summer, is no greater than for other comparable periods. So we can talk about two different trend in this area a shortterm and longterm," says Ove Kaj Pedersen and that there have been periods when confidence in the EU was higher than the Danish political institutions. "When there is much attention to a political institution, is confidence often. We saw the example in the 1990s when there was high unemployment and where the Rasmussen government introduced new measures, such as flexicurity model. There, decreased confidence in the Danish political institutions so that confidence in the EU was actually bigger, "says Ove Kaj Pedersen, stressing that the negative trend often also linked to the fact that politicians largely using the EU to 'wash their hands'. "All politicians are using the same trick. Municipalities do with the state and the government does with the EU," he says.
Tactical Eurosceptics And this is precisely the tactic that has often been used by Eurosceptics, as the debate over the summer is a good example, says Ove Kaj Pedersen. "EU foreign policy is precisely Danish People's marker region, and it is clear that the Danish People's Party by maintaining focus on the area to maintain a skepticism of the EU population," he says. It is a logic that several movements in Europe use, including during the recent EU referendum on the Lisbon Treaty in Ireland. "For the Eurosceptics, it is important to keep the debate going. Disappearing focus, experience shows us that skepticism also disappears," says Ove Kaj Pedersen and stresses that it was therefore a debate, the government would find it difficult to prevent, even if it has become a drag on them, "the government does not dare put the Danish opt outs on EU to vote because of this debate," says Ove Kaj Pedersen. Honestly: this result confirms that such an undemocratic system is unacceptable. The referendums in France, the Netherlands and Ireland has recently shown that the EU has with democracy and popular participation, as vampires have it with garlic. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez (which some see as authoritarian) agreed to drop its constitutional referendum, but the EU has not accepted their defeat yet, despite the fact that the interim has been voted down three times, although a no from a country really is enough to reject a treaty if the EU thus complied with its own rules. It is also dangerous to equate the EU and the immigration debate. Both because the EU is conducting an awful policy toward the rest of the world (where most foreigners the drill) with trade, agriculture, fisheries 'agreements' security, Schengen, EPA and more, and also because the ECJ in mediely of the immigration debate has undermined and trade union rights as the health system. recommended this comment Tell comment Read the newspaper
