Susan Parker, 2nd grade teacher, runs the Dasher’s club and after reviewing the tallied miles, gives students a charm and a chain once they reach 5 miles. They receive a new charm every five miles they run. At the end of the year, Mrs. Parker organizes a celebration for all students who have run more than 25 miles. Last year, 130 were recognized and the SUU football coach and players came as guest speakers with treats for each student. We will wait and see if this winter there is any “dashing through the snow”.

Every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30 pm to 3:00 pm you will find students, teachers, and Principal Paula Burgoyne out on the track walking and running together and keeping track of their progress towards better health and wellness. They have run this program for four years now and it has been continuing to rise in popularity and impact on the school. Having been there to participate, it truly feels like part of their culture. I was invited by everyone, teachers and students alike, to come join in for a “dash”. \

Miles are Piling up The Dasher’s club uses the EZScan application to scan students’ QR codes as they round the corner of the track by the school. This scan tracks how many miles the students have run or walked over the course of the year. The number of school wide miles ran continues to rise over these past four years. When the program began in 2014-2015 the school ran 4775 miles, in 2015-2016 they ran 5236 miles and in 2016-2017 they ran 7330 miles. Maybe this year they will break 10,000. There have been some stand outs as well with one tiny second grader running 67.5 miles last year and 6 others running over 50 miles that year.
