Park Overview and General Information DCPA is a 501(C)3 organization, run by an all-volunteer board of directors DCPA is made up of all Danby residents 18 years or older, all have voting rights Started as committee of DCC over 11 years ago DCPA owns Dotson Park Dotson Park consists of a 92-acre parcel of woods, meadows and wetlands 5 acres set aside near entry for future community center development Conservation easement in place to protect the park NYS Grant for road (~$190,000) and second grant ($482,000) for park development received Our budget is roughly $10K: liability insurance, directors insurance, misc. expenses. Our only debt is from 2 state-mandated Financial Audits a few years ago Basics established - land transactions, roads, basic signage, park rules established Trails established, getting use Hypar pavilion/table/benches for picnics, etc. installed Danby youth programs and Primitive Pursuits utilize the park 9-hole disc golf course established and getting lots of use. We do not own the baskets (on loan from the local Disc Ithaca Club). More people are using the park (obvious from numerous daily entries in the sign-in book). 2012-2013 DCPA Highlights Finances Established a Lien on the property with Tompkins Trust Co. to eliminate 35K+ worth of debt and any future interest – only have to pay it back if we sell Considering turning back the NY grant of $482,000 primarily due to having no one to administer it, and too few potential funding sources for our share Considering selling topsoil mountain to pay off remaining debt 2013 Spring Fundraising campaign successfully raised over $2600. Nineteen donors gave
$5 - $500, and a generous donor matched $1000 of it. Bookkeeping and tax filing were professionally done Set up a PayPal account to receive donations People Volunteers from Ithaca College helped w/ trails and kiosk on two work days Other volunteers helped on trail work days in 2012 and in April 2013 Recruited a Communications Director at last year’s Annual Meeting (see outreach) Outreach Revitalized our Facebook presence Cleaned up our listserv – sent out several updates Built a new website – soon will have streamlined web address: dotsonpark.org Had business cards made, put beautiful sign-in book in mailbox near disc golf course Exploring possible collaborations with Town and Community Council Put a changeable-letters sign out front to announce events, etc. Articles in DAN, occasionally in Broader View Weekly and Ithaca Journal Activities on the Ground New sign kiosk built in 2013 with $475 mini-grant from Sustainable Tompkins Food vendor sold BBQ meals in park in September – looking into trying that again Working on plan to remodel the front entrance w/ professional help - maybe add a new sign Expanded trail system – shortcut trail complete, loop in NE corner begun, trail paralleling road mostly completed Disc golf people are mowing the course with tractor on loan from a former board member. They are paying for gas, too. Installed bluebird boxes; Installed new mailbox on Rt. 96B Got piles of free wood chips from Town, began to spread on trails. Spooker Disc Golf Tournament was held in park. Future Plans Install coordinated signage throughout park Continue to expand trail system with boardwalks and overlooks, handicapped accessible Disc Golf Course development (make the 9-hole course permanent, expand to 18 holes, signage…) Install multi-purpose ball field Build large multi-purpose pavilion (for music, farmers’ market, barbeques, etc.) Build playground (natural and/or recycled) Host more events - trail runs, geocaching, concerts...
