Bismarck Public Schools District No. 1 Recommended
Descriptor Code: DDCA-BR Political Leave
Legislative Sessions Certified and classified employees who run for legislative office and are elected will be granted leave without pay for the period of absence when the elected body is actually meeting in session. Committee Work Beyond Legislative Sessions For necessary committee work, orientation sessions, etc., beyond the actual sessions of the elected body, a maximum of 20 days (in addition to pre-session orientation) of leave may be granted in any twenty-four-month period corresponding to the biennial legislative years. Any payment for such work may be retained by the employee, but will be deducted from the employee's regular payroll check. In this way, the employee will not have withholding taxes deducted from both State and School District paychecks. The School District will pay for any substitute employee needed, but the legislator-employee must make whatever preparations are necessary for the substitute to function effectively. The legislator-employee must inform the supervisor and, if applicable, the principal of such leave request (whether professional or personal), in writing for a specific day(s), in advance.
