Dear Parent/Carer We are delighted to be able to share with you some exciting news about the future leadership arrangements at Sandown Bay Academy. We have appointed Mrs Claire Charlemagne to be Principal with effect from January 2016. The daughter of a headteacher, Mrs Charlemagne was born in Kent and was a teacher of modern foreign languages at schools in Dartmouth and Exeter before moving to Saltus Grammar School in Bermuda as Head of Modern Languages in August 2002. She has since progressed to become Director of Studies, Deputy Head and is now Head of the independent co-educational school. Mrs. Charlemagne has raised the bar for her students in all areas of school life, and student success has been at an all-time high under her leadership. Examination pass rates at (I)GCSE have increased from 76% in 2009 to 92% (including Mathematics and English) in 2014 with 39% A*/A grades. Examination results and university entrance success from the Sixth Form programme have been equally impressive. Mrs. Charlemagne created the Saltus Teachers’ Academy providing internationally accredited qualifications for Bermuda-based teachers including National College Leadership qualifications, and led collaborative professional development with other schools on island and overseas. Mrs Charlemagne says: “I am honoured to have been appointed Principal at Sandown Bay Academy. I was thoroughly impressed with the Academy and in particular with the students I met while visiting the Academy earlier this term. There is a strong sense of pride in the Academy and we have an excellent foundation upon which to build towards even greater success. I look forward to getting to know the Sandown Bay community when I arrive on the island later this year, and to working together to secure the very best for our students.” We will be writing to you very shortly to confirm the interim leadership arrangements for the autumn term.
