Principal News Happy Holidays to One and All! There is no better place to be during the holidays than an elementary school, especially Lindon Elementary school. It warms my heart to walk down the halls and to hear children's voices singing and to watch students creating holiday gifts and performing acts of service. Speaking of service, last month during our Week of Service, our students donated over 2,000 food items to the Community Action Food Bank, and over 1,300 shoes to Miss Utah County to deliver to those in need in Africa. What a testament to the kind of children and families that attend Lindon Elementary! For the past few weeks we've been discussing the question, "How can I be my best self?" as a school, and certainly our students have had many opportunities to shine as of late. We have just completed the 1st Trimester, and report cards are just coming home. Our report cards look a lot different than they have in the past. All of our K-6 students will be receiving a Standards Based Report Card. This is new for our 4th6th grade students who have historically received a letter grade based on a percentage in the class. The SBRC focuses on student mastery of essential standards as opposed to a percentage. We've found that the kinds of conversations that our students, teachers, and parents are having about learning has radically transformed. For instance, instead of conversations about extra credit to raise a grade, we are hearing conversations about how to assist a student really learn and understand a concept. Please note that the desired grade on the SBRC is a 3. That means the student has mastered the standard. 4's can be given, but they represent students having deeper understanding of concepts beyond the standard. We'll be seeing more of those as the year goes on. It is also important to mention that there is not a letter grade correlation with the Standards Based Report Card scores (i.e. a 4 does not equal an A). Thank you for your support as we make this transition in the best interest of our students. If you have any questions please inquire at the office. Also sent home with report cards is our annual Stakeholders' Report. We are so proud to share with you what we've been up to over the past year! One side of the brochure report is our academic gains and the other side represents some really interesting information that sets Lindon apart from the rest. Thanks to our School Community Council and to Jennifer Christensen, in particular, for helping us to put together such a beautiful document to showcase our school. Finally, we've received a lot of feedback about the Christmas Sing over the years. We've tried to find a way for each student to be able to be seen and heard as they perform, for all parents to have a place to sit, and to have adequate room for all to enjoy the performance. We've had some successes and some challenges. Not to mention the fact we have been in gross violation of the fire code for years. Ultimately, we have decided to break from tradition in how we present our Christmas Sing. This year there will be a morning sing for students only where the children just perform for each other. It will give us an opportunity to do a run through of our program and to work out any bugs with enough room to have all of the students in the gym at the same time. The afternoon sing will be the performance for all parents. Students will come to the gym one class at a time and perform on the stage for their parents, and then return to their classrooms. The choir and orchestra will also perform that afternoon. We are still working out the possibility of all students performing "Merry Christmas, Lindon Elementary," so stay tuned about that. We appreciate your support as we explore the best way for our students to share their talents with you! One of the things that makes Lindon Elementary great is the unfailing support of our parents and community as we try new things and ever try to improve. Without that support we could not progress. We are grateful for you and for your exceptional students. Happy Holidays to all! Mrs. Ross
