Dear, Pukalani ‘Ohana,
Read, Read, Read Practice Makes Perfect! When learning any skills, whether it be basketball skills, tennis skills, or programming a robot, much practice is needed to perfect the skills. The same level of practice needs to occur to develop good reading skills. We want to support students’ need to practice their reading skills at home. To support this effort, and to respect the very busy lives our students have these days, I have asked teachers to think thoughtfully about the homework that is being required so that students will have more time to practice their reading skills. Some grade levels have already made changes and have been in contact with families. Grades K and 1 will only be sending reading homework home for the 2nd semester. Grades 2-5 will contact families directly and may have already. What does reading practice look like? Children should practice reading at their instructional level. If your child struggles with reading, you will be provided with reading material that is appropriate for practice. We want children feeling successful with their reading and not frustrated. If your child is struggling with every other word when practicing with the material provided, stop and notify the teacher. What is most important is for you to read to your children. Read to them from books that are at a higher level than their reading level. If they are sitting next to you or on your lap, this will help even more. Read the children’s literature books that include rich language and beautiful pictures. Or, start to read from the many exciting chapter book series that are popular. After the break we will provide you with a list of books that you and your children might find exciting to read together. Best wishes for the holidays, and enjoy the winter break. We look forward to seeing everyone back here at school in 2017! It’s going to be a great year!
