Magnetic Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications by Dipak Maity

Date: Time: Venue:

July 7, 2011 (Thursday) 2.00pm – 3.00pm EA-01-06 (DISCUSSION ROOM NEAR ENGINEERING AUDITORIUM)

Abstract Superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles have been under intensive investigation in various biomedical applications. However, it is still a challenge to synthesize high quality water stable ultrafine magnetite nanoparticles & nanoclusters for better magnetic performance and less side effects in medical MRI and thermotherapy. In this work, control sized hydrophilic magnetite nanoparticles with high saturation magnetization (Ms) have been synthesized through thermal decomposition. In vitro experiments have demonstrated high cellular uptake and low cytotoxicity while the AC magnetic field heating (i.e. hyperthermia) experiments showed effectiveness in temperature rise and cancer cell death using the magnetite nanoparticles. The magnetite nanoparticles have also showed high MRI relaxivity (r2*) and very promising contrast in vivo tumor imaging. Thus, the magnetite nanoparticles possess great potential in clinical MRI and magnetic hyperthermia applications and may be used simultaneously for cancer diagnosis and therapy.

Speaker Dipak Maity Mr Dipak Maity received his master’s degree in Materials Science Programme from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur in 2004. Currently, he is pursuing his PhD in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, National University of Singapore. He worked on his PhD thesis entitled “Magnetic Nanoparticles for Biomedical applications” under the guidance of Prof. Ding Jun & Dr. Xue Jun-Min.
