Dilemma story It was a Thursday morning and Charlotte was going to school. The bus arrived at 8:45 and would have taken 15 minutes so Charlotte would arrive at school at 9 o’clock. However, when Charlotte got on the bus and looked into her purse, she only had 95 pence. The bus ticket cost £2.50. Charlotte had forgotten her bus money before and sometimes there was a nice bus driver let her have a free ride. Unfortunately today the horrible bus driver, Dave, was driving. Dave was always rude and sometimes if he was early, he drove past the bus stop without stopping. As Charlotte had expected, Dave asked her to leave the bus. Charlotte didn’t have enough money for a taxi, her mum was already at work and it would have taken her 45 minutes to walk. Normally Charlotte wouldn’t care because she hated school, but that day she had a Maths exam. She decided the only option was to walk and be late for the exam. As she was walking she saw Doris, the old lady who lived in the house next to her. Doris was blind and sometimes Charlotte went to her house to look after her. Charlotte really liked Doris; she was very kind and always gave her sweets. Charlotte noticed that Doris’ purse was hanging out of her bag and it was open. The wind blew, and a £10 note flew out of the purse. Without thinking, Charlotte picked the note from the ground and ran away; knowing that Doris would never know and that she could get to her exam. When she was far away from Doris, she called for a taxi. Suddenly, she noticed a police officer running towards her. He had been standing on the other side of the street and had seen everything that happened. He took her to the police station, so she missed her exam and her mum wouldn’t let her go out for a month. 1. What would you do if you didn’t have enough money for a bus? 2. What could have happened if Dave wasn’t driving the bus? 3. If you were Charlotte, would you have taken the money from Doris? 4. What could have happened if someone else had dropped the money instead of Doris? 5. Would Charlotte have got to school if the police officer wasn’t on the street? 6. What would you have done if you were Charlotte’s mum? 7. What are the possible ways that Charlotte could have avoided this dilemma?
