Special Education Services The Lebanon School District promotes an inclusive model of special education service provision so that all students have access to the general curriculum and the general education classroom to the greatest extent possible and in accordance with special education law. Through the state and federal child find provision, anyone can refer a student to the special education process for consideration. A child-specific IEP team will meet to review needs and dispose of the referral in the way that addresses student needs in the least restrictive and most appropriate way. A continuum of services exists ranging from those services that are available to all students outside of and prior to involvement with the special education process through differentiated instruction and response to intervention, to referral to special education which may lead to special education identification as defined by state special education eligibility guidelines. Special education eligibility is not a given when students are referred. Eligibility involves three co-existing factors: presence of a disabling condition as specified by NH special education law, significant impact on the ability to achieve as documented by district and state assessments and school performance, and documented need for specialized instruction that is not available without special education services in order for students to access their education. If students meet these three eligibility criteria, an IEP will be developed, implemented and monitored. Identified students will then be reevaluated as needed or, at minimum, every three years to determine continued eligibility or discharge from special education. To the greatest extent possible and appropriate, all students on IEP’s will be included in the general education classroom. For those who require instruction outside of the general education classroom due to the nature or severity of the disability, this instruction will occur outside of the classroom setting for as minimal a time as is needed to most appropriately address student needs. All instruction regardless of where it occurs will allow students to access the general education curriculum and common core standards. Related services including counseling, speech, social cognition, communication, occupational therapy and physical therapy are available as recommended by IEP teams if such services are deemed to be needed to enable students to benefit from instructional goals and objectives included in the IEP and to access the general curriculum. Questions about special education policies, procedures, processes, eligibility and services should be directed to the Director of Student Services at 790-8500 x106.

We provide consistency in educational programming for students in our two PreK-4 schools. Both buildings strive to be friendly and welcoming to students and their families. The curriculum provides a solid foundation in academic skills and knowledge, supplemented by many enrichment experiences. The staff gives individual attention to students to prepare them for entry to Lebanon Middle School. A single grade, classroom inclusive approach is used for grades PreK-4. Specialists provide weekly instruction in art, music, and physical education. Librarians and library paraeducators introduce students to new literature and teach them how to locate and use information. School counselors meet with classes and small groups to develop social and problem-solving skills and understanding of growth and development. All students learn to use the computer to access, organize, and report information as well as a tool for writing. Special programs and activities include: Reading, ELL support, Artists in the Schools, Hood Museum ArtStart and Images Programs, Spelling and Geography Bees, Four Winds Science, Valley Quest, Partners in Health, service learning, assemblies/school sings, field trips, Walking School Bus, and guest speakers. Thousands of volunteer hours in and for our elementary schools are offered by our parents and friends each year.

Lebanon Middle School has a middle school philosophy for students in grade 5 through 8 from Lebanon, with students from Grantham joining our school in grade 7. Grade 5 students remain primarily in self-contained classes with a single teacher providing the majority of instruction. Grade six students change classes for each of the core subjects: reading, written language, math, science, and social studies. Grade six students are assigned to a homeroom for morning attendance and advisory activities. Students in grades seven and eight are assigned to homerooms within three teams. Each team consists of a language arts, a science, a social studies, and a math teacher. Math is cross-teamed due to the number of math courses available.
Exploratory Spanish is taught to all fifth graders. Sixth graders participate in Exploratory French.
French and Spanish are offered as electives in grades seven and eighth for those who have demonstrated proficiency in reading as measured by the NECAP and other indicators. Other electives such as band and chorus are available to students in all grades.
Special opportunities for learning include interscholastic athletics, Student Council, Destination Imagination, Art Club, Drama Club, Game Night, talent shows, Gymnastics Show, music festivals, Solar Sprint (Grades 7/8), Math Team (Grades 7/8), Quiz Bowl, community service, visiting artists, exhibitions, dances, and unity days.

Summer school courses enable motivated students to gain credit for courses failed the previous year.
Students are encouraged to take advantage of cocurricular opportunities in drama, art, music, athletics, school publications, School Council, Math Team,Youth in Action, Robotics Team, Students for a Sustainable Future, and other clubs and activities.
