Weekly Information and Updates 2012 Colorado Emergency Management Conference Preparations for the conference are in full swing with participant bags being prepared, programs being printed and presentations being finalized. At this point all we are missing is you. Remember to complete your conference registration on the CEMA website. There are currently more than 160 people registered for the event that is packed with information related to Emergency Management Systems and Processes. The draft conference agenda is also available on the CEMA website. Two people answered the conference trivia question from last week. They will both receive their extra raffle tickets at the conference. According to the news clipping in the Civil Defense scrapbook it was 56. However, according to the FEMA Disaster Information website there were 61. The trivia question for this week is about one of the Colorado Civil Defense Association/CEMA members. Do you know the member’s name who was a famous child actor in the “Little Rascals” comedies? 2011 DEM Customer Survey Results Thank you to everyone who participated in the customer survey. The 2011 DEM Customer Survey results are available showing the specific breakdowns and comments that were expressed. When reading the results you will see that several questions are highlighted. These questions are part of the DEM Annual Strategic Goals. A general overview of the results is: 1. Question #1: DEM Staff is accessible. Customers are able to reach DEM staff they need when the need to reach them? Results: 89% of participants agreed with this statement. 2. Question #2: DEM Staff is professional and courteous? Results: 93% of participants agreed. 3. Question #3: DEM Staff is responsive. We return your emails and phone calls providing the information requested? Results: 83% of participants agreed.

4. Question #4: DEM staff is knowledgeable. We have the necessary expertise to provide the services you need? Results: 92% agreed. 5. Questions #5: DEM Staff is helpful. Our assistance is valuable to your emergency management program? Results: 91% of participants agreed. 6. Question #6: Please rate your overall customer service experience with DEM. Results: 89% rated it excellent/good. 7. Question #7: DEM Operations Staff provides services which meet my expectations? Results: 89% of participants agreed. 8. Question #8: DEM Field Services Staff provides services which meet my expectations? Results: 81% of participants agreed. 9. Question #9: DEM Training Staff provides services which meet my expectations? Results: 77% of participants agreed. 10. Question #10: DEM Grant/Financial Management Staff provides services which meet my expectations? Results: 80% of participants agreed. 11. Question #11: DEM Mitigation Staff provides services which meet my expectations? Results: 96% of responders agreed. 12. Question #12: DEM Public Information Staff provides services which meet my expectations? Results: 86% of participants agreed. 13. Question #13: DEM meets my expectations of a state emergency management office? Results: 83% agreed with the statement. 14. Question #14: Is the direction of DEM clear? Results: 58% of participants agreed. 15. Question #15: We are accomplishing our mission: DEM leads, manages and coordinates state level actions for all hazards preparedness, natural hazards mitigation, emergency response, and disaster recovery in support of local governments within Colorado. Colorado WebEOC Updates WebEOC has undergone some changes for the better recently. When local emergency managers need to order resources through the State EOC, there is now the alternative to order via WebEOC. Users will see a new board named “Request Resources through State.” This board allows users to document their request and see what deployments are assigned to the request as well as the internal approval process. Future improvements to WebEOC will include improved ways to find the right mission set from the file library and improved email notification capacity.

Kudos in Emergency Management Red Cross to Honor Four Mile Fire Chief at Breakfast of Champions March 15 The American Red Cross is honoring Bret Gibson, Fire Chief of Four Mile Fire Protection District, for his exemplary demonstration of voluntary service, efforts to promote community preparedness and unwavering dedication to emergency response. Gibson will receive the Spirit of the Red Cross Award during the 10th Annual American Red Cross Breakfast of Champions on March 15. Visit the Red Cross website for more information on the Breakfast of Champions and the 10 local community heroes being honored. Colorado Emergency Management Association CO-CEM Gold Level Recipient Congratulations to Robyn Knappe, DEM Training Coordinator, for achieving CEMA’s CO-CEM Gold Level certification. This certification recognizes the full-time professionals who have met all training, education, experience and professional contributions recommended for the highest level of certification. Colorado Certified Emergency Managers are permitted to use the CO-CEM trademark designation.

Resources Focused on Emergency Management and Education Efforts What Would You Do if a Disaster Hit Close to Home or Work? The Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security is sponsoring a Denver Citizens Emergency Response Training. There are four required classes on March 2, 3, 10 and 31. HAM Radio and Disaster Preparedness Workshop The Denver CERT program is partnering with Denver’s ARES District 13 to bring you a monthly training. This month’s training is HAM Radio and Disaster Preparedness. It will be held on February 27 from 7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Denver Police District #3 (1625 South University Blvd, Denver, CO). Special Edition: Lessons Learned in the Recovery Phase of the Las Animas County Earthquakes Marilyn Gally, DEM Hazard Mitigation Officer, and I were able to visit with Joe Richards, Las Animas County Building Inspector, and Sheriff James Casias last month to discuss the recovery phase following the Las Animas Earthquakes in August 2011. We toured the community and met with a homeowner who shared her story as well. The photos and lessons learned are posted on our COEmergency site. In

next week’s Weekly Update I will share information on the Recovery Center and what the State’s role is in supporting your community in the aftermath of a disaster. Have a safe and fun week.
