DON’T LET THE BATTERY GO FLAT!

Wellesbourne

Street Fayre

Dear friends Summer holiday time is here, (although as I write, I am contemplating putting the heater on in my study). If you are having a holiday I hope you have or have had a wonderful time. I lead a service just a couple of weeks ago about finding time for rest. I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate some of those sentiments. When we go on holiday it is an opportunity for us to get away from the usual activities we have and spend time with family, friends or to spend time by ourselves, (a bit of me time). We don’t even necessarily need to leave home to have a holiday, we just need time out from the usual activity of our daily lives, so that we can rest and recharge. We need time out for our spiritual lives and this is not something that should be restricted to our holiday times, but holiday times are an ideal opportunity to recharge our spiritual batteries alongside our emotional and physical ones. We ought to try and develop the discipline to take time on a regular basis to commune with and listen to God. Our example for this is Jesus himself. Jesus, we are told, often withdrew from his busy life, to pray and be alone with God. Here he would be away from the pressures and demands placed upon him and he could give himself totally to listening to God, allowing him to discern God’s will for him. Whether you are going away on holiday or not this year I hope that you will find time for a break. And that we all remember that time out for a spiritual check-up is an important part of our spiritual diet, it allows us to be fed so that we are not an empty vessel. Yours in Christ

Inside CORNER What a pleasure to see a revitalised Street Fair, it really was a huge success. It’s definitely worth a colour edition for our photographers have captured some brilliant scenes of the day. Of course none of this happens without a great deal of work behind the scenes and Anne and her team have put an enormous amount of time and effort in to get it off the ground. To all we say a great “WELL DONE!” It’s a pity we can’t afford another colour issue this year for coming up there’s the School Fair on 7th July and Walton Fete early next month.

NEWS ROUND I am writing this article on the Sunday following this year’s successful Wellesbourne Street Fayre. The Lions were there, manning a stall and some sideshows whilst enjoying a very pleasant sunny afternoon. The weather meant that there was an excellent turnout for the event and the lucky or not so lucky lions that had wet sponges thrown at them in the stocks were kept suitably refreshed!! We will be attending another couple of local fetes in the area. First is the Barford fete on Saturday 6th July at Barford School and then the very popular Walton Fete on Sunday 11th August at Walton Hall. We look forward to seeing some of you. Please note Sunday 1st September in your diary. We will be holding our rural fayre at Wellesbourne Watermill. There will be lots of interesting things including Punch & Judy, balloon modelling, Shetland ponies, rare breeds, wood carving, bees, dogs and ducks. Sales pitches are available for £20. Please contact Terry Offiler on 01926 624153 or email: [email protected] . Lion

It was good to see many old and some new faces at our AGM. We met Ron Ball our Police and Crime Commissioner and we were impressed by his strong determination and praise for Warwickshire Police. A point emphasised by Ron was the importance of reporting crime or anything suspicious 101 is the number and you will be transferred to your local crime centre. Some of you have had trouble getting through but it is worth persisting. If there appear to be constant communication problems please let me know by phone/text or email, I work lots of funny hours at the Airfield but you will get me eventually and I am happy to present these facts to the police. Good to know you are getting your sheds and gates securely locked, Eric, our treasurer has bought more locks at £10 each, he can be contacted direct (01789 555678) if you wish to purchase. Smart Water is also essential if you want to able to track any stolen items and what is more deter the passing thief. Discounted at just £15 no home should be without it. Just give me ring and I will whizz round on my bike as soon as possible. We thank everyone who displays NW roundels; it gives out the right message to all and sundry. We have plenty in stock either give us a call or even better come and see us at the Walton Fete. As promised some handy phone numbers; Wellesbourne Safer Neighbourhood Sgt Rick Thomas 01789 444600, crime desk 02476 483432 or simply 101. If you do have to ring let me know how you get on

charity pamper event A big thank you to everyone who came to our charity pamper event on Saturday 25th May in aid of Amasango school for street children in Africa. We had a fantastic day! The sun was shining it was so lovely. Gemma and I pampered 23 ladies for mini treatments all in 3 hours! A BIG thank you to all involved in the run up preparations and at the event itself, Kate Mier and Wendy Biddington and their team for help and support with the smooth running of the tea event in the main hall with their lovely tea, Bucks Fizz and delicious cakes - NONE went to waste! My friend Emily who was our receptionist taking the money and organising bookings for treatments, my friend Roz who did some fun colour analysing, It was a great honour for the retired principal of Amasango School, Jane Bradshaw, to be there to support us too. Thank you so much to everyone who donated on this special day. Total raised was £ 448.81. Your kindness means so much to us and the children of Amasango. Anita Swetman of Tranquil Beauty

Saturday the 8th June saw the Wellesbourne Street Fayre take place in dry, sunny weather and the WI provided a raffle, manned mainly by Mrs Pat Bright, supported by WI members. A few weeks earlier a party of members went to the Loft Theatre in Leamington to see Calendar Girls. It was a superb production and a really enjoyable evening was had by everyone who went along. The speaker at the monthly meeting on the 12th June was Mr Huw Williams, who gave a presentation on the history of Warwick Racecourse. Warwick is the oldest racecourse in the country, four years older than Ascot, and celebrates its 300th birthday this year. Huw explained how it had grown from a small enterprise into a large concern which attracts around 6,000 people for each of the 21 fixtures per year. He gave background information about the work that goes on behind the scenes in preparation for a race meeting, from a 5.45am start to when the gates open at 2pm, and encouraged everyone to go along and experience the fun and excitement at least once! The talk was interesting, entertaining and informative and Huw’s enthusiasm for what is the second most popular spectator sport in the country was obvious

WALTON NEWS In 1843 Sir John Mordaunt decided that for the first time since medieval days Walton should have its own clergyman and so he extended the chapel, adding an extra bay and the sanctuary as well as building a parsonage house. Soon the village had a thriving church life with three services a Sunday. The Rev. William Furneaux, the first incumbent, wrote a glowing account of village life at that time, giving thanks that there was no 'ale house' to encourage drunkenness and he ended by pointing out how lucky the inhabitants were to live in such 'an exceptionally fair ground'. In the last few days it has been easy to see what he meant. Our reward for the long hard winter has been an outburst of blossom everywhere, the apple trees laden and the hawthorn lighting up the hedgerows and the woods resplendent with (at least) fifty shades of green. In addition to extending the church, Sir John set in motion a great woodland programme and the trees that were planted then have all come to maturity at the same time, so it is good to know that work is going on in the woods to ensure that there is new growth and that the woods will retain their beauty in future times. Although the pattern of Sunday life has changed, the church that Sir John cherished is still a place of worship with a service every Sunday. We keep going, but none of us are getting any younger and recently Ken Olorenshaw has handed on some of his many duties. We owe him such a great debt of gratitude for everything he has done and is still doing, and also to those who are taking on some of the tasks such as getting the church ready for services, opening and locking the church and preparing for the many weddings. We are always glad of more help, for example we would welcome any volunteers who would enjoy arranging the altar flowers from time to time. The faithful few work very hard to raise the money that keeps this lovely building in its exceptionally beautiful setting alive as a place of tranquillity and worship, so please do come and support us at the Fete and Dog Show on Sunday 11 August from 1.30 - 4pm when there will be all the usual attractions for this traditional event. We are grateful to Puma Hotels for allowing us to use the lawn in front of the Hall which they in their turn are doing so much to preserve, keeping its character as a great stately home.

A special mention has to be made of Wellesbourne Primary School who organised the children for the parade, made crowns in school and had the older students write pieces about Wellesbourne. The school musicians held a concert in the church and the maypole dancers entertained everyone in the Church car park. The Church was a delight with the wonderful flower arrangements done by the U3A flower arrangers and organised by Jenny Down. The way the village has worked together over this has been magnificent. Everyone has had an input. All the local businesses provided raffle prizes or made donations to the fayre. We will let you know the final figure raised when all the monies have come in. Finally, I would like to thank the committee who gave up lots of their time to help organise this. I hope you all agree it was a wonderful event bringing the village together. Now we need to plan next year; if you would like to help let me know. Thank you everyone. Anne Prior Chairman

Wellesbourne Street Fayre

What a fantastic day. The weather was magnificent, the street and Church were full of stalls and you all turned out - an estimated thousand people came through. The day began with the children’s parade from the precinct led by the queen and her consort and she cut the ribbon to open the street fayre officially. Businesses and charities in the village manned stalls and provided lots of entertainment for adults and children. The Punch and Judy (sponsored by McCarthy and Stone) was very popular with all the children, as was the man making whistles not to mention the Lions who heroically manned the stocks to be pelted by wet sponges. The Army Bomb Disposal Unit proved to be popular and gave everyone an insight into what they do. The soldiers gave up their day off to be with us.

PARISH COUNCIL PAGE From the Chairman:-

ENGLAND. Such an honour to live in this Dear and Generous land that I am proud to call home. Land of my birth. I have lived in Walton for almost 30 years and marvel that it remains untouched by change and progress. Well, almost, except for the Le Mans track we call Walton Rd. I have addressed this problem of the speed at the Council and hopefully before a serious accident happens something can be done. The lovely ancient bridge by the lake is threatened by coaches and HGVs! The inevitable has happened and serious work is to begin strengthening it .I have voiced concern for years. I was elated to see our Union Flag aloft in rd Walton on April 23 ,a Balmy, Glorious, Spring St. George’s day. Birthday of our celebrated English Bard, too.( I know St. George was a Turk, but after repossession of the Holy Land from the Saracens, he deserves our patronage!) Although certain groups seek to debase it, The George Cross remains English and a combined part of our Union Flag of Great Britain. Throughout the ages our Warriors have returned to these shores having risked life, limb and sanity to defend us and our right to freedom, democracy and justice. Sadly, many have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Hailing, proudly, from an illustrious military background I know of the cost to family. There is so much conflict across the Globe which our Armed Services are called upon to mend and monitor. They do so unconditionally, with Honour, modesty and Bravery. We owe to them our very safe, secure way of life. We must never be complacent and take the gifts we have around us for granted. To fly our flag is a small token of our esteem. There are many who would like to obliterate our rich history and talk down our pride. I say to those people, go and live elsewhere. Maybe, if our young were taught the historical facts that enable them to live so freely, they would understand and show more respect As Parish Councillor for Walton I welcome any concerns and enquiries you may have. Cllr Mrs Valerie Ashmead-Bartlett.

Planning. Several residents had requested the Parish Council to make a statement saying that it would not accept any development on the Donkey Field. After considerable discussion the Council decided not to support a blanket ban. This was for several reasons, Firstly it would not be taken seriously by potential developers and planners in the event of an application. Councillors felt that there would be much more credence given to the council deciding an application on proper planning grounds. Secondly it was felt there were other sensitive 'in fill' sites in the village that did not merit being markedly different from the Donkey Field, which it was acknowledged was within the conservation area. At another meeting Councillors made a strong objection to an application to build a bungalow behind Grade 2 listed buildings on School Road, opposite to the rear of Hastings House. Here the main concerns were the number of rooms overlooking existing properties, poor access for pedestrians as well as vehicles and a history of inadequate sewerage facilities. Councillors were given a presentation on proposals to develop the Police Station site. The developer is suggesting two pairs of semi-detached houses and at the rear a flat over four garages. A new draft Core Strategy, which will determine housing development in the District, will have been considered at a July meeting of the District Council. SDC decided to increase the number of houses proposed from 8000 to 9500, at a special meeting on 15th May. The draft Strategy will require examination, and approval by the Government, and will be adopted during 2014. Grants Defibrillator Max Down of the Lions gave a summary of the need for at least one defibrillator in the village. (there is a view that we should have at least three) This equipment can be used by anyone (once having contacted the medical emergency services) to stabilise someone who has suffered sudden heart failure. Many lives are being saved by this rapid response facility - twelve young people in the Midlands alone are alive today because of the defibrillator. Each secure box and equipment costs £2000. Councillors agreed to grant £1000. The village Co-op have also offered £500 as well as agreeing to have the equipment sited at their store. Max and the Lions are seeking funding from elsewhere as well as money the Lions themselves might provide. The Parish Council appreciates letters of thanks from organisations that have received grants for this year.

Councillors expressed their concern, again, about the disruption to the village due to the excessive traffic going to, and leaving the market site. Around lunchtime on the May Bank Holiday Dovehouse residents were particularly irritated as they were unable to leave Loxley Road at the Fire Station roundabout. The matter will be discussed again by the Community Forum and see whether the agreement made at a meeting between the market, police and highways held a couple of years ago can be improved. CCTV At a meeting with the District Council to review the effectiveness of the CCTV monitoring service we and other communities receive in South Warwickshire, it was agreed that more information should be given on exactly on what the cameras pick up. Currently the Parish Council are just told of the number of incidents for specific categories such a vehicle speeding and anti- social behaviour. Also we heard that communities that don't pay their subscription (Wellesbourne this year is paying £1000) will have their cameras allocated to places that need them - such as us! Village Hall The Council are considering the sort of risks the Parish Council will be subjected to if it proceeded with the acquisition of the Village Hall and soon the Council will be deciding the next move. District Councillor Representation The Local Government Boundary Commission is reviewing the number and boundaries of the wards in Stratford District. Currently there are 53 Councillors, one third being elected each year. It is likely that they will recommend that the number of Councillors be 36, which for Wellesbourne means a reduction from 3 to 2. The Council will move to having one 'all up' election every four years. The aim is to improve the accountability and efficiency of local Councillors. The final recommendations are expected to be presented in early 2014, and the first elections are likely to be held in 2015. The Parish Council will be asked for its opinion on the reduction of 3 to 2 Wellesbourne Councillors. David Close (Chairman.)

Remembering John Grantham

All councillors and the staff were shocked and sorry to hear of John’s sudden death. Forty years’ service on the council by a very active colleague are hard to sum up, but I am sure John would wish his work towards saving Chedham’s Yard as an important part of our local heritage and his long-established interest in expanding sports facilities to be particularly remembered; his first lobbying for a sports hall was two Jubilees ago. These were large-scale projects, but he was always busy with many lesser but important aspects of council work, and his neatly-organised files of past correspondence and minutes were readily at the council’s disposal. “I’m sure I’ve got something about that at home” was a familiar phrase, and he always had. Colleagues remember his kindness and consideration, and his readiness to use his experience to give helpful advice: several of us have benefited over the years from his strong belief in “supporting the chairman”. He actively encouraged younger people who might not have considered standing for the council to do so, drawing on his wide range of contacts across the village. John knew Wellesbourne past and present, people and buildings, in depth, and this is something we shall miss very much. The tributes paid at our most recent meeting underlined that he was always “there to help”, always had time to look at anyone’s problem, and was never without a sense of humour even in his later days of ill-health and disability. The crowded church at his funeral spoke for itself. It was sad that we saw him for the last time at the May meeting, but very appropriate that this was when we paid tribute to his long years of service and surprised him with a presentation of an engraved crystal bowl. We stood in silence in his memory at the June meeting, and will be considering how best to commemorate his many years of work for us all. Wellesbourne School

This week in Year 1 and 2 we have been learning about Dick King Smith and his book ‘George Speaks’. We have had great fun learning about an extraordinary baby who at 4 weeks old can not only talk but can teach his big sister the times tables! We have been learning about the artist Liechtenstein and created our own inspired pictures, wrote and performed our own lullabies, designed our own super baby with a super power just like George. We even made our own ‘George speaks’ films on the I-Pads. It has been a FANTASTIC week and what a lot of learning and fun based around one text!

Wellesbourne Allotment Association “My name is Ken Manning and I have been a plot holder at Wellesbourne Allotments for nearly 18 years and treasurer for much of that time. I moved to Wellesbourne in 1995 with my wife Anne and our two children from Littlehampton, Sussex, to continue my career as a plant research scientist at Warwick HRI. Several generations of my forefathers were small-scale farmers in Cambridgeshire, which is where my interests in gardening and growing food probably come from. As a young boy I would help my father who was a head gardener. Although we lived modestly in a tied bungalow I have many happy childhood memories of rural life in Sussex. I was lucky enough to have a grammar school education and went on to study biochemistry at Surrey University. My research career over 34 years began at the Glasshouse Crops Research Institute, Littlehampton, and included crops such as mushrooms, tomato, strawberry, apple and cucumber. The highlight was the discovery of a gene essential for fruit ripening in tomato. This work, in which I played a major part, was published in Nature Genetics in 2006. Now my life seems to have come full circle, returning to the practical aspects of allotment gardening. I believe in the health and social benefits allotments can provide and in the importance of children learning about where our food comes from and how it is grown. I am also passionate about protecting Wellesbourne allotments for future generations. One of my other interests, along with another plot holder, is keeping bees, so important for much of our food. Do come along to our Open Day for the National Gardens Scheme on Sunday 14 July, 25pm. You will see our wonderful allotment gardens and imaginative scarecrows, be able to buy plants and produce, learn about bees and have afternoon tea while being entertained by the Warwickshire County Youth Jazz Orchestra. What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon!”

The ingleby foundation This month we would like to welcome Emma to the Watermill Barn as she takes over the day to day running from Shaun who has done a great job since we opened in August last year. We have known Emma for a number of years and she brings with her lots of exciting ideas, a new menu including a wonderful selection of homemade cakes and pastries as well as continental breakfasts. Everyone involved with the Charity has during June been involved in the BBC Gardeners World exhibition at the NEC on the back of the success at our Horticultural site in the north of the County. The new photo group is developing really well with a steady increase in new members. st Our next Car Boot will be held on Sunday 21 July at 10am, we hope to see you there.

Thank You

It has been a very busy month for me since the election, but I want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who voted for me at the beginning of May. I’m very pleased to report that we won the election with a clear lead. Following from that a big “thank you” must also go to David Johnston for his last four years of work for Wellesbourne. My key priorities as your new County Councillor will be to continue to protect Wellesbourne and surrounding villages from inappropriate new housing developments. To ensure that traffic speed and volume is reduced and to work with colleagues to establish better sports, community and youth facilities for our village. I will always work hard for all the people of Wellesbourne and will try never to let you down. Thank you for your continuing support. Cllr Danny Kendall Tel: 01789 841237 Email: [email protected]

1st Wellesbourne Rainbows On Wednesday we went to the fire station and Stuart talked to us about how quickly they can get ready to take the fire engine out when someone calls the emergency services. He told us that you can call 999 but that you can also call 112 from a mobile phone and then they can pinpoint where you are so it makes it much easier for them to find the incident they have been called to. We saw where they have their kit lined up ready to jump in to when they arrive and we had a look in the fire engine and saw all the breathing apparatus. They are usually ready to go out within 3 or 4 minutes of the alarm being raised. At the end we all had a go at squirting water out of one of the hoses. Stuart can change the water so that it shoots up as far as three floors high or goes out sideways to make a shield with the water. We all got absolutely soaked but it cooled us down, as it was a lovely sunny day. We had a brilliant visit and all enjoyed ourselves very much. If you would like to register your daughter to join Guiding please go to www.girlguiding.org.uk/get_involved or you can find out more information by calling Jane Dodge on 07710 602036 or emailing her at [email protected]

Fosse foodbank Did you know that 1 in 5 people in the UK are living below the poverty line. Today in Wellesbourne and the surrounding area there are families struggling to put food on the table. For people on low incomes, a sudden crisis – redundancy, benefit delay or even an unexpected bill- can mean going hungry. Every day parents skip meals to feed children and people are forced to choose between paying the rent and eating. th The great news is that from 19 July help will now be available in Wellesbourne. The Fosse foodbank warehouse based in Kineton, working in partnership with the Trussell Trust national foodbank network, is opening a new foodbank distribution centre in Wellesbourne with the help of a team of people in the village pulled together by St. Peter’s Church. Foodbanks help individuals and families in crises, through the provision of carefully selected emergency food supplies as a short-term measure allowing a breathing space at times of great need. They also take the time to listen and signpost people to further support. These services help to prevent family breakdown, housing loss, crime and mental health problems. We work with local professional care workers who refer people, with a food voucher, to the foodbank which will be based at Sure Start in the Library. This is a great opportunity for you to contribute to and support local well-being in a simple practical way. So, how can you help: Donate food at one of the drop off points listed below Volunteer to collect and distribute food. Contact us at: [email protected] Give funds. Contact us on the email address above or post a cheque to St. Peter’s Church, Church Street, Wellesbourne, CV35 9LS. Let ius know if you can gift aid it. HEAD CHEF

ADAM BATEMAN

of WALTON HALL writes for our readers:For this edition of Wellesbourne and Walton News I’ve decided to do a classic but favourite recipe of mine. Simple, but with Wimbledon round the corner and English strawberries just coming into season why not? Please try and let me know the results at [email protected] CRÈME BRULEE with Strawberry Sauce Ingredients For the crème brûlées 7 free-range egg yolks 110g caster sugar 2 vanilla pods, seeds only 500ml whole milk 500ml double cream 55g demerara sugar For the strawberry sauce 250g fresh strawberries, Preheat the oven to 120C/250F/Gas ½. For the crème brûlées, place the egg yolks into a bowl, add the caster sugar and vanilla and whisk together until pale and fluffy and well combined. Add the milk and cream and whisk until well combined. Ladle the mixture into ramekins and place the ramekins into a deep roasting tin. Place the tin into the oven and pour in enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Bake for one hour, or until just set. Remove from the roasting tin and allow to cool. When cool, refrigerate the crème brûlées for at least two hours, or until thoroughly chilled and firm. For the strawberry sauce, place half of the strawberries into a food processor and blend to a purée. Strain through a fine sieve. Halve the rest of the strawberries and stir through the passed sauce. When ready to eat, sprinkle the demerara sugar over the top of the brûlées and caramelise with either a chef’s blowtorch or by putting them under a hot grill until the sugar starts to bubble and caramelised. Place each dish on a plate and serve with the strawberry sauce in a small dish alongside

Parish Profile

St Peter’s Church is taking youth very seriously. As reported in last month’s WWN it has appointed Cherie Prior as a full time youth worker. Born in Chelmsford, Cherie lived in Takeley in Hertfordshire for 17 years before moving to Braintree in 2007. She then went on to University where she graduated in law and met her fiancé Matt. Before coming to work in Wellesbourne she had experience of youth work both with a charity and in a school. Cherie now lives in Nuneaton with Matt. Her first challenge in the job was finding the best route from her home to Wellesbourne Growing up Cherie was taught the importance of giving something to others. She helped her mother run the local Helen Rollason Cancer Charity. She was also in charge of her own youth group with the Brentwood Catholic Youth Service, organising among other things trips to Lourdes. To do youth work properly Cherie thinks it’s important not simply to wait for youngsters to come to the clubs, but to go out and meet them on the streets. She has been walking around the village handing out survey cards and talking to young people, finding out first hand what it is they feel they need. Cherie also likes innovation. She has worked with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s RPO resound project, to bring music to young people using simple instruments. Cherie took on a wha wha tube, although she does admit that she managed to play it at the wrong moment during the performance. Justice and fairness are very important to Cherie. One of her heroes is Lord Denning, who she sees as one of the best judicial figures in history. The moment in history she would have chosen to be at was the signing of the Magna Carta. Cherie likes reading – the Harry Potter series are her favourites. She enjoys all sorts of music from Elvis to Nirvana and Miranda Hart makes her laugh. Eating out, she goes for Pub Grub and Italian. Ideal menu would be crab cakes with chilli sauce, lasagne and lemon cheesecake. Cherie knows that working in the local community means honing or developing new skills – hence the baking of a cake for the recent Street Fair. We wish Cherie well in her new appointment.
