Description: In Christie Hodgen's first book, I'm intrigued as a writer to see her process of fleshing out characters and aligning her adjacent stories so that when they meld the reader in you feels satisfied but stricken or saddened or otherwise affected by the outcome. I read her third book Elegies for the Brokenhearted before picking up A Jeweler's Eye for Flaw. As I began reading Jeweler's I noticed right away that the stories and characters overlap with Elegies, especially those in the beginning. I found that my objective stance at the beginning of the book could not hold through till the end, when the words on the page evoked such emotion that tears arrived: tears of loss or hope or relinquished hope. All the while I thought that perhaps a brother and sister, Ephram and Agnes, so different but each facing obstacles and following what they believe is true for them in life, will be led to glory or redemption. Classic references to other literature, which I first discovered while reading the tales of Don Quixote, still can't save us from the reality of life and death. This book diverts in the true sense of the word; though even as we may be distracted or entertained by the stories within, there is still the final thesis to be written and submitted. And we have to face, upon looking back at college or any endeavor, if what we studied and reflected on and wrote about had a point. Well, of course it did. The whole quad-crossing or quad-lounging, cafeteria-eating, free-concert-attending, stressing-out, meeting-with-trusted-professors-in-the-greenhouse lot of it. But how easily could we have just not finished that interminable paper and never moved on in life? What I enjoy most about Christie Hodgen's writing is her description and placement of heavy items like a mother's piano or Ephraim's typewriter case, and the way her characters, and maybe even readers, relate to each other through them. The stories of Graceland speak to me. Stories of a place that I've never been to but came very close to, a place where it does not really snow, in a city where you make one turn and end up in a frightening spot where you're lost, pull into a gas station, scramble for a map, lock your car doors (but keep the windows open because September's heat persists), and close your eyes and just wish to have already arrived on Mimosa Street. But unlike Agnes, who may or may not have grown to actually exist in her

brother's travels, I knew where I was going when I went to Memphis and I can say how I got home. I liked the second half of the book better than the first half, but if I'd read the entire thing before embarking on her third novel I probably would've enjoyed the whole thing more. Still, in any order, it's neat to see recurring themes spliced with new unfolding, new characters, and character development. I think it's also neat to imagine, especially after getting to know her characters and themes through these two books, how much of her stories are based in her own life experience: teaching French, growing up in a depressed town, playing piano. Christie Hodgen is a talented writer who infuses great creativity into her work and I'm looking forward to reading her second book, Hello, i must be going. The only problem I had with this book was that it was not checked for spelling errors or word usage very well. In many places there were words omitted or the wrong word used ('or' instead of 'of') and in one place one of the character's names is misspelled, Ehpraim, I think it was. It was slightly distracting especially when words were omitted because sentences took on a different feel than I think the author intended: it somehow made it more formal, kind of a British English, and then I was also distracted because I started to wonder if the omissions were intentional.
