Make Your Own

OOBLECK! Inspired by BARTHOLOMEW AND THE OOBLECK ! by Dr. Seuss

Materials Needed:! ! 2 cups cornstarch! 3-4 drops of food coloring! 1 cup water Directions: Prepare your area. Cover the table with newspaper if you choose, but it is not necessary. Newspaper will allow for quicker clean up, but without newspaper you can clean up the spilled oobleck with a spatula or kitchen scraper and reuse. (I have tried both ways with no preference.)! ! Pour 2 cups cornstarch to a large bowl and set aside. In a separate pourable cup, mix food coloring and 1 cup water. Then, add the water mixture to cornstarch in the large bowl. You may try to mix with a spoon or spatula, but it is easier to use your hands.! ! Initially, the mixture is going to be watery. Do not add more cornstarch. Within minutes the mixture will become less watery.

Clean up spilled oobleck with a spatula! or kitchen scraper and place it back ! into the bowl to play with again! www.happybirthdayauthor.com

Bird Name Generator Inspired by SCRAMBLED EGGS SUPER by Dr. Seuss On small strips of paper, write the names of common birds in your area; cardinal, sparrow, hawk, duck, woodpecker. Use a bird field guide if you need help finding the names. These names will make up the last pile of your Bird Name Generator. While compiling the bird names take notice of descriptive words that are in the full name of many of the birds like "breasted" (White-breasted Nuthatch), "throated" (Ruby-throated Hummingbird), and "bellied" (Red-Bellied Woodpecker). !Write these descriptive words on strips of paper and they will make up your middle pile. !Lastly, make pile of cards with silly words, like spritz or snapple-bapple or favorites from SCRAMBLED EGGS SUPER like beagle and ruffle!

Stack the cards into the three piles and place them face down. !Pick one card from each stack to generate a bird name. !(We came up with names like the Spritz-tailed Wren, Whammer-Hooded Starling, and Frizzle-bellied Hawk.)!! ! Take this activity a step further by designing eggs for each of your birds. We used plastic Easter eggs and Sharpie markers. We also drew a picture of each bird on a small piece of paper along with the bird's name and a drawing of the egg. Then, we had a egg hunt. When my children found each egg they looked through their papers to find out which bird the egg belonged to.

Did You Find Them All, Sir?! I know the task is tall, sir.! Search-and-Find-in-a-Bottle Game Inspired by FOX IN SOCKS by Dr. Seuss

1. Wash and dry a plastic bottle and measure how much rice will fit in. We used a standard juice bottle which needed seven cups of rice.

2. Place rice into a sealable gallon-sized baggie. Add 1 Tbsp. vinegar for each cup of rice directly into the baggie. Then, squirt in a small amount of blue food coloring. 3.Close the baggie and squish around the rice to mix the vinegar and food coloring. You may need to add more food coloring.

4. Once you have the desired color of rice, dump it onto baking trays. Allow rice to air dry. It will dry within a couple of hours. 5. Print game pieces and game board from provided activity sheets. Laminate game pieces or mount on cardboard to make game pieces sturdy. Add game pieces throughout bottle as you add the rice. 6. See if you can find them all, sir!
