Setting up your DSLR

In order for the Camera Trap to trigger your DSLR, you must first install the ‘Magic Lantern’ custom firmware onto your camera. Full instructions for doing this can be found here: http://www.magiclantern.fm/install.html Once you have successfully installed the Magic Lantern firmware onto your camera you must then configure the following settings on your DSLR: Sleep after 30 seconds Press the ‘Menu’ button on your DSLR and navigate to the ‘Auto Power Off’ option – set this to ‘30 sec’ Half Button Press Movie Recording Press the erase/delete button on your DSLR to open the Magic Lantern menu. Now navigate to the Movie section and change ‘Movie REC key’ to ‘half shutter’.

Once these settings have been applied your camera is now ready to be correctly controlled by the Camera Trap, you may now set the DSLR up as you would normally with your desired exposure settings. It is strongly advised that you use Manual Focus as your camera may not record if it is unable to automatically find focus when motion is detected.

Setting up the Camera Trap

Insert 6 new AA (LR6) batteries into the Battery Holder (7). Now, using a small screwdriver turn the Mode Dial (6) to the amount of footage you wish the camera to record when motion is detected by the PIR Motion Sensor (2). This can be between 1 and 9 minutes. If you select ‘0’ on the Mode Dial (6) then the DSLR will instead take 2 photographs each time Motion is detected. You can now plug the Camera Trap into your DSLR with the provided Black Cable, this goes from the 2.5mm shutter release port on the side of your DSLR to the 3.5mm DSLR cable release connector (3) on the Camera Trap.

Basic Operation

Ensure steps 1 and 2 have been properly followed. Make sure that you are happy with the exposure settings on your DSLR and that it is in the correct mode (photo/movie) and switch the Camera Traps Power Switch (5) ON. The LED (1) will flash for 30 – 40 seconds; do not touch any of the buttons on your DSLR or Camera Trap during this time. After around 30 seconds your camera will go to sleep and the Camera Trap LED (1) will stop flashing. The unit is now ready to detect motion and trigger your camera.

If you now move in front of the PIR Motion Sensor (2) the Camera trap will ‘wake up’ your DSLR and trigger it to begin recording or taking pictures. After your pre set time (1 – 9 mins) the Camera Trap will stop your DSLR recording and after a further 30 seconds your DSLR will go to back to sleep until motion is detected again.
