Move On When Ready is a program where students can take one or more courses per semester at a local college and earn credits at the high school and the college. Tuition, fees and books are paid for through the Georgia Department of Education resulting in a free college credit. Courses taken through MOWR are awarded an additional 10 points to the SCHS transcript grade

MOWR Technical courses designed for students to take vocational training courses (ex.- HVAC, Collision Repair, etc.) and earn credit for these courses at both the high school and Athens Tech. These courses’ tuition, fees and books are also covered by this program. These courses do not receive the 10 additional points.

Get accepted at college  Amass a GPA that meets or surpasses the

   

minimum required by the college- “Academic” vs. “Cumulative” Take Accuplacer, ACT or SAT Handouts (send them to college) Complete application for college Send transcript through www.gafutures.org Notify your high school counselor when you have been accepted

Once ACCEPTED, Get Registered for MOWR Class(es)  Come to Guidance Office for a brief meeting to

get the Participation Agreement form filled out  Make an appointment with the MOWR liaison at your college to register for a class, sooner than later.

Once ACCEPTED, Get Registered for MOWR Class(es)  Bring the completed Participation Agreement

signed by student, parent and counselor to the MOWR advisor at the college to be able to register for classes at the college.  Consider travel time, course load, remaining graduation requirements, SCHS bell schedule and other possible ramifications tied to your course choices when selecting courses

Complete the Course Approval Process  Complete the MOWR application on GAFutures.org each semester.  Bring a copy of your college class schedule to counseling office to complete the course approval process.  Your college classes will now be paid for by the State.

Finish well  Finish the college class that you enroll in

 Study harder than you ever have  When you get punched by the rigor, do not give

up!  Talk to your professor, go to office hours for help, seek tutoring if you need help  Bring your grades to Ms. Kitchens at the end of each semester as soon as you can

If you drop a class at the college, you MUST notify the school counselor immediately. Failure to do so could prevent further participation in MOWR. You are required to take at least a total of eight (8) classes between SCHS and your college.

Use your years of wisdom. Join your student in the decision points around course choices. You are incredibly valuable to this process. Recognize that your student might not make an A in every class at the college, and be ok with it. Be prepared to not have access to talk to your student’s professor if there is an issue.

Know and understand the rules that govern this program as outlined in the Move On When Ready Program Policies and Procedures included in tonight’s handouts Exercise your veto if you feel that your student is choosing a course schedule that is too advanced, not advanced enough or not factoring in enough time for travel back and forth

Advise students on course options, rules that govern MOWR, and potential problems with choices To devise a schedule at SCHS that can coexist with your MOWR courses. (SCHS Schedule is primary) To approve classes through GAFutures.org

Take graduation requirement courses that you might choose to take at the college in the fall You will have less grades in a college class typically than you do for a class here at SCHS. Be aware of your resources There is less time in class in a college course. This can be good- more free time. This can be bad- more free time. Time management.

Because there is less time in class in a MOWR course, the amount of time that a professor teaches you is less than a high school teacher. Practice your best listening skills in those classes. Recognize that your first source of help in a MOWR class can be found at the college; we (SCHS) do not have the ability to help with a class that is not taught by us. Professor & advisor can help. Don’t stick your head in the sand.

 

A MOWR course is still a college class with college rules and regulations, separate from the authority of your high school Pay attention to deadlines and the details of your application process When in doubt, call your advisor at the college Read the Guidance Blog Emails, Sign up for text message alerts

If you are not scheduled for a class at a given time at SCHS, you should not be on campus without permission Letter grades are assigned a predetermined number grade

Students receive letter grades in their college classes for the most part. Those will translate into the following: A = 100 B = 89 An additional 10 C = 79 points are added to D = 70 this grade for the F = 65 
