Laural Meade  Harrison Otis............................................................................Serita Robinson*  In early September we began rehearsal with some source materials and a  few  big­picture  ideas.  I  knew  I  wanted  to  tell  the  story  of  the  bombing  of  the Times and that I wanted to structure it as a lecture­demo, but we had no script  – only history and the research books to guide the way.  A  few  weeks  into  our  development  process,  the  Occupy  Wall  Street  movement  began. It  has  been  especially  eerie to hear the same ideas  echoed  in  both  movements  –  100  years  apart.  But  one  could  argue  that  the  separation  of  wealth  has  existed,  in  some  form,  in  our  country  from  its  inception.  The  difference is in the extremes; a further difference lies in the type of action people  have taken in response. The Occupy movement served as an inspiration for me  as we continued to take our own action in creating this piece. I hope it compels  you to consider the power dynamics at play then and now, and to reflect not just  on the choices people make but why they make them.  Much  credit  is  due  to  our  primary  research  sources: The  People  v.  Clarence Darrow by Geoffrey Cowan, Dynamite: the Story of Class Violence in  America by Louis Adamic, American Lightning by Howard Blum and The Hairy  Ape by  Eugene  O’Neill.  Thank  you  to  the  acting  ensemble  for  their  insights,  creativity and patience and to my colleagues in the Department  of Theater who  have been so generous with their time and talents. And finally thanks to you for  receiving this work­in­progress in a spirit of discovery.  ­­Laural Meade  For a full list of image credits and web sources used in the production please visit our website at  http://college.oxy.edu/theater/ and follow the links to the Dynamite page.
