Instructions : 1) Answer any five full questions. 2) Draw neat sketches, wherever necessary. 3) Assume any missing data suitably. 1. a) Explain briefly, the method of determination of phreatic line when the dam section is homogeneous and provided with horizontal filter.

b) Explain the purpose and salient features of blanket grouting and curtain grouting with relevant sketches. 10 2. a) Explain briefly, the various methods of reducing seepage through the foundation of earthen dam. 10 b) Explain briefly, the classification of earthen dams from the point of view of design and from the point of view of construction.

3. a) Discuss briefly, the slurry trench cut off wall with a neat sketch.

b) Draw a neat sketch of typical zoned earthen dam showing all the possible components and explain the function of these various components.

5. a) List the objectives of grouting in dam foundation. Explain briefly, the size and direction of grout holes for grouting. 10 b) Explain briefly, the various compacting equipments used for construction of earthen dams in different types of soils.

7. a) What is critical slip circle in the stability analysis of earth slopes ? Explain briefly, the Fellinious method of locating centre of critical slip circle.

b) An embankment is to be made of soil having cohesion of 50 kPa, angle of shearing resistance of 22° and unit weight of 17 kN/m3. The slope of the embankment is 1.5 H : 1 V and height is 12 m. Determine the factor of safety for the critical slip circle, given that Fellinious directional angles are α = 26° and β = 35°.
