Course Objective: To expose the students to the basic principles of the technology of data communications and networking. Upon completion of this course, the students should have a good working knowledge of communication technology (network components, transmission links, link control, protocols, network topologies, error detection and correction), network management and security, privacy, legal and ethical issues, and local area networks. Course Description : This course introduces the student to the concepts and terminology of data communications and networking. It includes topics on communication models, network protocols, standards, LANs, WANS, the Internet, intranet and networking applications. The emphasis will be to develop an understanding of the underlying principles of data communications and networking. Textbooks: 1. Course Material Sources: https://sites.google.com/a/du.ac.bd/mahmudul-islam/ Learning Outcome Upon successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: - Describe the hardware and software commonly used in data communications and networking. - Define the functions of the seven layers of the OSI reference model. - Compare and contrast WAN and LAN protocols and topologies. - Describe the major WAN and LAN applications. - Explain the functions of the major components in a network. - Explain the ways of network interconnections. - Identify the security requirements of a network.

Course overview. Standards organizations. The OSI reference model. Networking basics.

Week 2

The physical layer. Physical media: coaxial cable, twisted pair, fiber-optic cable. Wireless LANs.

Week 3

The data link layer. Media access. Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface).

Week 4

The network layer. Protocol stacks. TCP/IP stack. Internet Protocol. Quiz.

Week 5

Internet addressing. Subnetting. CIDR. The transport layer. TCP Protocol.

Week 6

TCP/IP Protocol Suite. HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol), FTP (File Transfer Protocol), SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol).

Week 7

Mid-term exam.

Week 8

LAN types and topologies. Wide area networking. Internetwork. Routing protocols. WAN topologies.

Week 9

WAN topologies. Transmission facilities.

Week 10

Modems and dial-up technologies. Remote access services (RAS).

Week 11

Programming client-server applications (preparing to the second assignment). Network operating systems (NOS).Quiz.

Week 12

Protecting the network. Security issues. Planning the network and data security.

Week 13

Network Administration. Managing Network Performance. DHCP. Common network problems. Troubleshooting.

Week 14

Final Exam.

Marks Distribution: As per University Rule. Special Instructions:  Class Lectures are believed to be the most effective and reliable source of knowledge for this course. Therefore, students are strongly encouraged to participate in all the classes attentively. Students will not be allowed to enter into the classroom after 20 minutes of the starting time. If you miss more than two consecutive classes you will lose 10% from the class participation marks. Moreover, You MUST have at least 80% class attendance to sit for the final exam.  There is zero tolerance for cheating at DU. Students caught with cheat sheets in their possession, whether used or not used, &/or copying from cheat sheets, writing on the palm of hand, back of calculators, chairs or nearby walls, etc. would be treated as cheating in the exam hall. For plagiarism, the grade will be automatically become zero for that exam/assignment.
