Vattnet under broarna - A dark work of brilliance By The Northern Light NB: Before the review I'd like to point out that prospective readers of this not from Scandinavia would do well to learn Swedish (of course, in an ideal world we'd all be speaking Swedish by now) before they purchase it, since the book is in this beautiful language. That being said, the book is definitively one of my favourite books, and one I'm sure to return to several times in the future. The book is a collection of stories
written by Henrik Johansson, this 30-something inhabitant of Stockholm. He was until the publication of this book probably best known for his 2005-novel "Sista steget" (The last step) that caused quite a fuzz when it came out, due to the fact that it was written by a person radically opposed to the current status quo of his native Sweden of massive immigration and him being a critic of perhaps the most culturally Marxist state in the world: Sweden. I must admit that I really enjoyed his previous book, as well, despite the occasional excessive violence, since it is merely a description of a future dystopia (though one that seems more and more likely to appear as the years go by), and who doesn't enjoy the occasional dystopian literature? This book is, as has been pointed out in reviews by both the Swedish Library Association and famous Swedish author Nikanor Teratologen, of infinitely higher literary qualities. The wide array of themes brought to life in the various stories are impressive in themselves, ranging from more classic "crime" to for example the titlestory of "Vattnet under broarna", which carries with it a certain dark streak of supernatural qualities on the Swedish countryside. It should be said right away, that the book will for some readers appear as too violent, but I believe this merely reflect the violence that is all around us in our society of 2011, and it is fair to assume that worse it shall become still. Considering the gore and perversions prevalent in the extremely hyped up trilogy by fellow Swede Stieg Larsson that is touring the world in both book- and cinema-form these days, I'd say the violence in this book pales in comparison. Granted, this is of course no Thomas Mann or Knut Hamsun in literary qualities, but once again, it is too tempting to draw upon the parallels to Stieg Larsson once again (a Maoist extremist that created the ADL-supported Expo similar to the SPLC in the US that has wrecked so many idealists' lives with their slander it is hard to exaggerate), whereas one has enjoyed a post-mortem success that is nearly incomprehensible considering the explicit Leninist themes in his books, Johansson will "naturally" be confined to a much more limited audience, even though his work in my honest opinion is of much greater originality and literary worth. Such is the modern world with all that that entails, I guess! Unlike Larsson, though, this book is not a work of propaganda, but instead contains within its covers quite a few gems: the young man that suddenly can hear what everyone *really* think about, or the journalist that brings back with him from Africa the greatest scoop he'll ever get (yet not in the form he would wish). I thoroughly enjoyed myself whilst reading these stories, and they left me wishing for so much more, despite the rather extensive length of the book. An wholesome buy if I ever saw one that I think any reader will appreciate, no matter their political or cultural point of view (at least I hope people by now are nuanced enough for this to be a fact). If you're not lucky enough to have been born up here, perhaps this would be the perfect opportunity to start taking Swedish-language classes? Med denna novellsamling har Johansson utvecklats flera steg som författare, som visat sig bland annat genom att till och med Bibliotekstjänst känt sig manade att publicera en förvånansvärt nyanserad recension i sin katalog. Novellerna är undantagslöst bladvändare, och bygger upp en effektiv, suggestiv stämning. Personporträtten är ofta riktigt nyanserade och mångfacetterade, även om arabiska och afrikanska invandrare (ofta föga
överraskande bokens "skurkar") ibland blir lite väl karikartyrartade för att kännas särskilt trovärdiga ens för en riktigt "politiskt inkorrekt" person. Våldet och hämndscenerna är ibland påkallade av handlingen, men känns ibland överdrivet utstuderade och lämnar en bismak man skulle klara sig lika bra utan. Trots det kan det inte förnekas att Johanssons bok är populärlitteratur av finaste märke. Och vad gäller onda stereotyper och sadistisk hämnd saknas inte sådana inslag heller hos betydligt större framgångar som hejdlöst överskattade Stieg Larsson. Med större exponering skulle den här boken kunna sälja lika bra som vilken svensk "spänningsroman" som helst, för trots enstaka brister är den mycket underhållande och välskriven.
