What happens if school or setting want to refer my child to an EP? 

Who are EPs? Educational Psychologists (EPs) are specially trained psychologists who are skilled in assessing children and young people’s educational needs and offering advice on how they can be supported in school



 What to EPs do?



EPs work with individual children, school staff and parents, either individually, in small groups or with whole staff teams. Work can include:  Observations  Assessment, including exam arrangement work  Therapeutic intervention  Training  Problem Solving  Gathering Children and Young People’s Views.



If your child’s teacher has concerns about his / her academic progress or social and emotional wellbeing they may wish to refer to him / her to an EP. If you agree to a referral then the EP might work directly with your child, for example, observing them in class, meeting them to carry out assessments and to talk with them or they may choose to meet with you and school staff to discuss how your child might be supported. The EP may talk to any other professionals involved with your child if you are happy for them to do this. Following the EPs involvement you will receive a written record of what has been done. You are welcome to ring the EP to discuss this and ask any questions you may have.

Can I refer my child to an EP? Referrals are usually made by the staff in your child’s school or setting but if you want to talk to an EP you are welcome to ring the service directly on 0191 643 8739 Educational Psychologists use their knowledge and understanding of psychology to support the educational achievement and social and emotional wellbeing of children and young people aged from 0 – 25 years
