ELDER ABUSE PRESENTED BY: DR BARBARA MEDDIN

Dr Barbara Meddin is director/principal consultant, Human Service Consulting. Dr Meddin has a long and diverse career as a social worker which has involved working in the area of family violence. She has worked in both policy and service delivery in respect to elder abuse in Australia and overseas. She helped establish the first adult day care program for the elderly for Jackson County Illinois in the United States of America and currently teaches a course on family violence at Notre Dame University. Dr Meddin’s reputation as an outstanding human service trainer is recognised throughout Western Australia.

This one day workshop will provide participants with the skills, knowledge and ability to recognise the signs that suggest an elderly person may have been harmed or is at risk of harm. It will look at not only identifying risk situations for seniors but will provide guidance as to the worker’s duty of care where they are concerned about an elderly person’s safety and wellbeing. The workshop will cover who should be contacted to provide protection for the elderly person.

Who is this course suitable for? This workshop is suitable for all human service workers who either directly provide services to the elderly, either in their home or in an aged care facility, or who work with families where the elderly are a part of that family or where the family provide care to an elderly relative.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: •

Define what elder abuse is as well as what the different types of abuse are, including social and financial harm and be able to recognise the signs an elderly person has experienced harm or is at risk of such harm

Understand why such harm occurs and who are the perpetrators of such harm

•

Identify the two different types of perpetrators of elder abuse

•

Find out which Government and non-Government agencies have a role to play in protecting seniors and become aware of the relevant legislation in respect to elder abuse

•

Know what they should do when they suspect an elderly person is being harmed or at risk of such harm including appreciating the limits of confidentiality in such situations
