Emmaus Haus brief We have a fantastic client for our January gig: Emmaus Leeds, which is pencilled in for the 24th January 2015. They provide accommodation and meaningful work for the homeless, people they term ‘companions’ once they are residents. The work they offer is in their second-hand goods shop. Their ask of us is simple:

they need more people to donate goods, and more people to buy them. We’re doing a one day make-in: ‘Emmaus Haus’, which offers lots of opportunities for hands on making of stuff, as well taxing your cerebral abilities, creative and communication skills. As it’s just one day, the pressure is on to produce stuff on the day. We will use the evening gig to whip up some interest in Emmaus, by using it to showcase the day’s creativity and Emmaus’goods and services. Communicators, visual designers and thinkers Brief 1 is all yours… Brief 1.1: Content and media strategy Emmaus are recruiting a part time person to do their communications. We can help them hit the ground running by creating a content strategy that gives them something to talk about, and a media strategy for how to get their messages out. A style guide would be a great way for them to keep on track once the GFN Crew have packed up shop. How else can we help in the short & long term? Brief 1.2: Wordpress refresh Emmaus Leeds have a wordpress site that could do with a design and content refresh. It was established to provide greater flexibility than the main website affords, but has lost its way. Brief 1.3: Website content push There is a national website for all Emmaus shops, including Leeds. This has limited functionality, but needs some clear calls to action and a content refresh. Designers, makers and crafters lend us your appendages and experience for Brief 2… There is a budget for materials, which will mainly come from selling tickets for the evening. Tell us in advance what you need.

Brief 2.1: Design upcycle Emmaus get a lot of shelving wall units, which they struggle to sell on in their shop. With the pick of their warehouse stock, use your design skills to turn these into useful and attractive furniture on the day of the gig. We will vote on the audience favourite item during the evening gig. Finished products will be for sale on the evening, and in the shop after the gig. Brief 2.2: Fashion upcycle Can you take a shop full of clothing and material and give it a fresh lease of life that generates a buzz about others doing the same? Bring sewing machines, pins and crimping shears and set about transforming clothes and materials into fashion and furnishings to sell on the evening and in the shop after the gig. The audience will judge their favourite creations during the evening: catwalk show or hip mannequins? You decide. Brief 2.3: Vinyl upcycle With a great stack of old vinyl in the shop, can you remix something and debut it during the evening gig? Organisers, illustrators, graphic designers, promoters, doers and spare pairs of hands, we need you for Brief 3… Brief 3: Event curation & promotion To make the most of the evening gig, we need a crew to help plan and promote it to ensure that we help get the Emmaus message out there from day 1. We will also need help during the day and evening to make sure everything is running smoothly.
