3 Claims. (Cl. 134-72)

The present invention relates to a curtain for a com

mercial dishwasher.

More particularly, the present in

vention relates to a multi-?-ap curtain for use in a commer

cial dishwasher which is adapted to con?ne steam and water in the various cleaning stations in the dishwasher. Dishwashers which are utilized in commercial installa tions are generally constmcted such that the dishes to be washed are placed in racks which ‘are, in turn, moving on a conveyor means.

The racks enter .a scrapping station

in the dishwasher where the food is removed from the dishes by a spray of hot water. The racks of dishes then move to a washing station where they are washed clean and rare ?nally moved to a rinsing chamber to receive a

It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a multi-?-ap curtain ‘for a commercial dishwasher which is adapted to con?ne the spray of steam and water 10

within the dishwasher.

'

Another object of the present invention is to provide a multi-flap curtain for adishwasher wherein, during the normal dishwashing operation, the wear on the curtain is reduced. Still another object of the present invention is to pro vide a curtain for "a dishwasher which is formed in a

plurality of independently hanging ?aps. Other objects and :the nature and vadvantages of the instant invention will be apparent from the following

description ‘taken in conjunction with the accompanying dnawings, wherein: Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of a dishwasher illus

trating the curtain embodied in the present invention positioned at various cleaning stations in the dishwasher; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the curtain em

terial. The ?exible partitions are also positioned adja

bodied in v‘the present invention, a rack of dishes being illustrated in dotted lines showing the relationship of the advancing dishes with respect to the curtain ?aps; and Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of the curtain illus trated in Fig. 2. In general, :the present invention comprises a curtain for use in a dishwasher which is adapted to con?ne the spray of steam and water Within the dishwasher and within the various stations in the dishwasher. The cur tain maybe formed of ‘any suitable material 811011.185 duck, rubber or :a plastic fabric, or :a cloth material maybe treated with a plastic composition. The curtain embodied

spray of rinsing water. During the cleaning operation, it is necessary to prevent water from splashing outside the machine and, moreover, to prevent contaminated water

from entering the washing and rinsing stations. Thus, it has been the practice to con?ne the scrapping station, washing ‘station, and rinsing station into separate areas by positioning partitions between the individual stations. However, since the racks ‘of dishes must be continuously moved from station to ‘station, the partitions separating the stations are generally fabricated from 1a ?exible ma

The dimensions of each ?ap in the curtain may machine. 40 vary with the requirements for a particular dishwasher Prior to the instant invention, it has been the practice and the number of ?ap's maybe varied without departing in the dishwashing ‘art to ‘form the ?exible partitions in from the spirit of the invention. the form of curtains which are positioned between the Referring to the drawings, and particularly Fig. 1, a cleaning stations in the dishwasher ‘and at the ends of dishwasher adapted to be employed in a commercial the housing thereof. Moreover, base 10. The pulley 20 is rotated by a suitable source of the continuous passage of the racks ‘of ‘dishes through the dishwasher caused the curtains to wear out in a relatively

areas which comprise a scrapping station 24, a washing station 26 and a rinsing station 28. Suitably positioned, but not shown, in the various cleaning stations within the steam to the cleaning station ‘and reducing the wear on the curtain due to the frequent passage of dishes through 60 housing 22 are spray headers provided with nozzles which direct hot water onto the dishes as they pass through the the dishwasher, includes an ‘arrangement whereby ‘a plu cleaning stations. In order to prevent splashing of water single rality of curtain independently stiuctu-re, the formed curtain ?apsstructure are formed being insus from the dishwasher and to con?ne the steam and water pended from the ‘top of the dishwasher housing. The within'the cleaning stations in the housing 22, a plurality ‘independently formed ?aps are fabricated such that they of curtains generally indicated at 30 are provided and have varying vertical dimensions, and are suitably secured are suspended from arms 31 which are secured to the top of the housing 22. together to form a stepped arrangement. By forming the folds in varying vertical dimensions, a complete cur Referring now to Figs. 2 and 3, the construction of a‘ tain unit is formed whereby when a rack of dishes strikes curtain 30 is illustrated, the complete curtain unit 30 the suspended curtain, the ?ap corresponding to the height including a plurality of vertically disposed ?aps. Since only the flap 70 construction of the curtain embodied in the present inven corresponding to the height of the dishes is contacted, tion, the multi-?ap arrangement includes a shortened ?ap

The multi-?ap curtain embodied herein is also of simple

construction and is therefore easy to fabricate, and, al though the present invention includes a curtain formed of Referring again to Fig. 2, positioned between the 10 two pieces of material arranged in four separate ?aps, it is shortened ?ap 32 and main ?ap 34 is a ?rst intermediate within the scope of the invention to provide any number ?ap 44 which is formed integral with a second inter of ?aps formed in various sizes and which may be formed mediate but longer ?ap 46. vThe ?aps 44 and 46, are in individual pieces of material. formed in a single piece of material and folded to form It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various separate ?aps. The separate flaps-44, 46 are secured to changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the main ?ap 34 adjacent the stitch line 36 along a stitch the invention and therefore the invention is not limited line 48 and thereby complete the curtain unit. By secur to what is shown in the drawings and described in the ing the flaps 32, 44, 46 along the upper end of the main speci?cation, but only as indicated in the appended claims. ?ap 34, each flap is provided with an exposed face. The hem 50 is then turned to form a hem edge 52, the hem 50 and hem edge 52 being stitched to each ?ap face along a stitch line 54. By forming the hem S0 and the hem edge 52, a weighted end for each flap is provided, the

The dish '60, as it approaches the scraping station 24, will strike the longer intermediate ?ap 46, but will pass under the intermediate flap 44 and : the shortened ?ap 32, and ‘the larger dish 62 will strike the shorter intermediate ?ap 44 leaving the shortened ?ap 32 in its vertically suspended position.
