Why aren’t there more boys in upper level foreign language classes? We often hear about the achievement gap with girls in math and science, but why is no one talking about the similar gap with boys and upper level World Language acquisition? In this session you will learn how to engage and excite boys in your classroom to help them become advanced language learners who are active participants and who see the value in continued World Language study. .

If you don’t want to purchase or are unable to purchase a soldering iron, electrical tape is a great alternative. You can also use it to connect wire to the battery if you don’t use the AA battery holder. How to build the mini-robots 1. Cut the foam board into four pieces, 2 are for the legs, 1 for the body and 1 to attach the battery / battery holder to the motor. 2. Attach two pieces of foam board to the motor, a small piece on the top and a larger piece on the bottom. (The top is the part with the connectors coming out)
3. If you are using a battery holder, glue the holder to the top of the motor, then solder the wires to the connections on the motor. If you are using wires, wait to attach the battery until you have attached the legs. 4. Attach a push-pin to a short piece of pipe cleaner
5. Attach the tail to the end of the motor – this is an important and necessary step as it unbalances the motor - which is what makes the robots move. Be careful not to put too much glue on the tail, this could stop the motor from turning.
6. Attach the legs. (Note: the legs pictured here were a little too small, they should be a bit wider) 7. If you are just using a battery, now is the time to glue the battery to the top of the motor and solder the wires to the motor. You will then attach the wires to the battery with electrical tape when you are ready to have the robot move. 8. Add eyes, hats, etc. Et voilà!

Items necessary for the lock box activity: The lock box : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001927JN4?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui _detailpage_o00_s05 The locks : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00R22Q0ZS?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_a ui_detailpage_o08_s00 I like these locks because you can reset them as many times as you would like using a variety of combinations with the numbers 0-9.
Before students complete the attached worksheet they will need to play the following Kahoot on Animal Noises. Kahoot on Animal noises:
https://play.kahoot.it/#/k/dc65bebe-fe50-4c86-99a2-cced9ea0d0a3 After students have played the Kahoot! Divide them into teams / groups of three to four. They will work together to put the correct animal noises in the blanks on the worksheet. When they are done with the Animal Sounds in Different Languages worksheet give them the worksheet that has the Clues to open the Lockbox. Once students have filled in all of the possible combinations for the three locks they will bring their sheet up to you and then as a group they can try to open the locks. They must all be there working to open the locks – no one can work on possible combinations while they are trying to open the locks. If they get all locks open they win! If they get one of the locks open but not the rest – they will have to go back to their seats and figure out what went wrong – and you will re-lock the locks on the box for new teams that come up.

Cars & Directions For this activity students will sit back-to-back, one person, student A, will be giving the directions, telling their partner, student B, where to go with the car. Student B will be “driving the car” making sure that they don’t move the car unless their partner instructs them to. If done correctly, when finished, the students will turn in one map that has the path colored / drawn by the car. Sample activity using Lyon city map. Student A: give the following directions to your partner, Student B. Student B needs help getting around the city to run a few errands before they meet their friends at the movie theater. Every time Student B stops for an errand they should mark the errand stop with an X. Student B just finished eating at “Le Nord” (located across from the star on the map). Student A says: •
Find the star on the map and then find the restaurant Le Nord that is directly across from it. You are right outside of Le Nord.
•
Turn right on Rue Neuve and continue until you get to Collège-lycée Ampère, you need to pick up a book for your sister that she forgot.
•
Leaving Collège-lycée Ampère take a right on Rue de la Bourse (you will be heading North) until you get to Rue du Bât-d’Argent. Take a left on Rue du Bât-d’Argent. Continue on Bât-d’Argent until you get to Léon de Lyon, you need to pick up your dad’s cell phone that he left.
•
Across from Léon de Lyon is the Musée des Beaux Arts de Lyon, stop there to pick up some post cards for your aunt’s birthday.
•
Leaving the Musée des Beaux Arts going straight on Rue Pleney until you get to Rue de la Fromagerie, stop at the Eglise Saint Nizier to say hi to your neighbor, then take a left.
•
Et voilà! You have arrived at CNP Terreaux just in time for the screening of the new blockbuster hit “My life as a Pineapple.”
