Architect wanted for Urban Lab Position / duration – Full time position (3 months probation period) Location – Bangalore, Karnataka with travel in the field areas Reports to – Senior Designer, Built Environment, SELCO Foundation Last Date for applying – 15th May, 2015 About : The Built Environment vertical of the Urban Community Lab looks at the physical interventions required in communities. Physical environments are known to have long-term impact on the overall health, well-being and productivity of occupants, which the BE team intends to address through a human centric approach. The team looks at 3 scales of work i.e. Community Level, Dwelling Level and Human Scale, which involves planning, efficient spatial and material usage, alternative technology and passive design techniques. The Urban community lab revolves around one central question: How might we inspire and encourage communities to take an initiative in solving their own problems or improving their situations in a sustained manner? Main Areas of work in the Bangalore include: slums, low-income households, poor institutes, small scale businesses and marginalized communities. Responsibilities : 01. To understand and implement project vision and mission 02. To lead project activities (research, ideation, prototyping, execution), project planning, budgeting, and monitoring processes. 03. To lead and motivate the project team and coordinate work with consultants and volunteers. 04. To strategize projects and contribute to the growth of the Built Environment vertical. 05. To interact with and engage with community, building rapports with individuals and key stakeholders. 06. To employ resourcefulness in project design, implementation and monitoring, trouble shoot project problems, identify and implement creative solutions 07. Physical environments are known to have long-term impact on the overall health, wellbeing and productivity of occupants, which the BE team intends to address through a human centric approach. However given the constraints in the resource poor settings, communities are known to put their own health as the last priority. UCL is looking for a designer to develop effective communication aids that will put health back into the conversation / focus amidst communities in urban slums. Main Areas of work in the Bangalore include: slums, low-income households and marginalized communities. Responsibilities : 01. To understand living environment in context of urban slums in different locations 02. To study and analyse community behaviours; their perception of living environment 03. To identify the best methods to start a conversation about indoor air pollution with the communities 04. To develop potential communication aid prototypes (such as flashcards, games, audio-visuals, these are open to experimentation) 05. To test each prototype to vet which ones work better 06. To develop final prototypes in Kannada and Hindi 07. To train SELCO Foundation staff on using the communication aids in the field 08. To document the entire process: contextual inquiry, designing prototypes, testing, iteration, final designs; in a report and sharing it with SELCO Foundation.
