Three Academic Faculty Openings The University of Nevada, Reno is hiring three new academic faculty members to join its rapidly growing Mechanical Engineering Department. Two may be at any rank (assistant, associate or full professor) with expertise in thermal/fluid science, system dynamics and control, advanced manufacturing, materials processing and/or solid mechanics. These positions are intended for experienced faculty interested in mentoring our young and growing department and leading by example. About the Mechanical Engineering Department In the past two years, the ME Department has hired 7 new tenure-track assistant professors and 2.5 full-time lecturers. It currently has 15 tenured/tenure track (T/TT) faculty members (3 full, 2 associate and 10 assistant professors), and 3.5 lecturers. The faculty are supported by 2 administrative assistants and 1.5 development technicians. The growth in T/TT faculty positions has largely been driven by the Nevada System of Higher Education’s commitment to raise the research stature of the University to Carnegie Classification R1. It is also driven by undergraduate enrollment, which has more than doubled in the past 10 years.
The Department’s faculty and students are performing a wide range of theoretical, computational and experimental research in solid mechanics, thermal/fluids/energy sciences, and system dynamics and control. There are wellestablished research programs in composite materials, mechanical behavior of materials, nuclear packaging safety and biomedical visco-elastic mechanics.
About the Reno/Tahoe Area The Reno/Tahoe area is one of the country’s outdoor meccas. Within an hour’s drive are several famous winter sports resorts and hundreds of mountain biking and hiking trails that provide year-round recreation. Reno is a 3½ hour drive from San Francisco. The area’s proximity to Silicon Valley and sustained efforts by the State of Nevada to diversify the economy have resulted in many high-tech companies having operations in Reno, including Tesla, Apple, Switch, Microsoft, Amazon and Intuit. The College of Engineering has been active in developing partnerships with industry and designing curriculum and courses to prepare graduates for Nevada’s new, knowledge-intensive industries.
