England 2017 Welcome to One91’s 16th annual England trip! We put this trip together in order to give students the opportunity to explore and learn more about Shakespeare's England and relevant British history. We will visit places we'll study in English 9 and honors English 9. In order to fully appreciate William Shakespeare's writing, it is interesting to understand how the Tudor dynasty changed England and the rest of the world forever. We study this time period extensively in class, and this trip is an extension of that study. THIS YEAR ONLY: If there are upper classmen who would like to join us, we are willing to adjust some of the free time for those students. As there is no travel club opportunity this year for upper classmen, we are inviting all BHS students who would like to join us to do so. Stop by C251 for info and materials.

William Shakespeare 1564-1616 This 12 day trip is a life changing experience. It's fun and educational both! Each year we take between 22-40 students. This size group is just right to learn, laugh, and travel together comfortably. Students may begin to sign up now; if you sign up before December 31, 2015, you save $200.

Travelers should be aware that although this trip is exceptionally fun, it is a structured field trip. We have activities scheduled every day that are not optional, and free time will consist of a choice of activities that are supervised by a teacher. We do, however, have FUN teachers accompanying you! The staff to student ratio is 6:1. This year we are excited to include all district 9 th grade students in this trip. Please note that we are scheduled to depart on Jun 12, 2017 . Until 60 days prior, EF (our travel company) reserves the flexibility of up to 4 days on either side of the requested departure date. In 15 years, that has only happened once. We were in informed in January; this was done to accommodate our hotel requests. HOW TO SIGN UP Please read the accompanying packet from EF or review the same information on their website: eftours.com. You may sign up online or over the phone. Our tour number is 1813952BV Eftours.com or 800-665-5364 ISD 191 has a travel insurance policy that covers all international travelers. You do not need to purchase the EF travel insurance. SPENDING MONEY This can be a hard question to answer. The paramount question is: Are you a shopper? We've seen some boys (sexist, I know) spend as little as $150, simply because they only purchase small, inexpensive souvenirs. I've seen some girls (again, sexist) spend hundreds more. $300-$400 should be more than enough for shoppers. Please review the list below for items we will be collecting for before departure. The good news is that the US dollar has been stronger lately. FIRST TWO ARE

NOT OPTIONAL:

1. $25 US from each traveler for lunches (we visit grocery stores to buy bulk lunch products like bread, cheese, meat, peanut butter, fruit, chips, cookies) to eat in local parks whenever we can; this is a huge money saver). 2. $75 US from each traveler to cover tips for our tour guides and coach drivers (tips for restaurants are included in the tour price). THE FOLLOWING ARE OPTIONAL: $14 US for the London Eye (check it out on line) Adult price $30 Musical Theater Event- every year, we offer the opportunity to see a show. We'll choose between several, and the price varies- usually about $40 US. This is optional.

FUNDRAISING . Many students band together to hold large garage sales and other community events. All monies must be paid directly to EFtours. Subway and McDonald's hire 15 year olds, as does Culvers and Taco John's. Babysitting and lawn mowing/snow removal are lucrative ways for you to earn as well. Be creative! There will be several organized fundraisers to help offset the costs, but you should not expect to raise the entire amount through school fundraisers. If you have any questions, please contact Amy Stead in C251.

Overnight in London

Day 3 Guided sightseeing of London A local guide leads you on a panoramic tour of London. Begin in Grosvenor Square; site of the U.S. embassy and the house where Eisenhower once lived. This area is sometimes called “Little America.” Continue to Hyde Park Corner, located at the southeast corner of Hyde Park, one of London’s largest parks. At bustling Piccadilly Circus, the intersection of five busy streets, check out the bright lights and big city displays, before heading to Trafalgar Square, site of Nelson’s Column, built to commemorate his 1805 victory in the Battle of Trafalgar. Pass Speaker’s Corner, where anyone with something to say is invited to speak his mind. Snap a photo of the Houses of Parliament and continue along London’s South Bank for views of the famous Tower of London and London Bridge. Stroll across the Millennium Bridge to see St. Paul’s Cathedral, the magnificent 17th-century Baroque church designed by Sir Christopher Wren. Finally, witness a London tradition-the Changing of the Guard (subject to scheduling) .

Visit to St. Paul’s Cathedral

With its predecessor damaged beyond repair in the great fire of London (1666), this is the fifth church to stand on the site atop Ludgate Hill. One of over 50 churches commissioned by the crown to architect Christopher Wren, this is without doubt his masterpiece. You will see the decorated chancel and interior of the dome before descending to the crypt. Here lie memorials to military figures, most famously Wellington and Nelson.

Overnight in London Day 4 Guided excursion to Hampton Court In 1514, Cardinal Wolsey built Hampton Court, a splendid Renaissance palace of grandeur unprecedented in England. In fact, it was so grand that King Henry VIII deemed it too opulent for a cardinal and appropriated the estate for himself. As you walk amidst the booming echoes of the medieval Great Hall, listen for the voices of former residents. Many people consider this to be Britain’s most haunted house. The palace’s renowned Astronomical Clock shows the hour, day, month, phase of the moon, and time of high tide at London Bridge. On the grounds of Hampton Court is one of the best outdoor mazes ever designed. Try to find your way to the middle of the hedgerow labyrinth and out again.

Visit to the Tower of London

The history of London comes to life at this complex of 20 towers surrounding Tower Green. The oldest tower, known as the White Tower, was completed in 1097, when it was the tallest building in London. The Tower buildings have had many uses over the years; perhaps the most infamous was as a jail for political prisoners, not to mention two of Henry VIII’s wives. The most famous exhibits at the Tower are the British Crown Jewels. Aside from a short interruption during WWII, these splendid baubles have been locked behind the Tower’s walls for centuries.

Overnight in London Day 5 Visit Westminster Abbey The present abbey was built over three centuries, starting during the 13th century. With the Confessor’s Shrine, the tombs of Kings and Queens, and countless memorials, it has also been the setting for every Coronation since 1066. Neither a cathedral nor a parish church, Westminster Abbey remains a “royal peculiar” under the jurisdiction of a Dean and Chapter, subject only to the Monarch.

Overnight in London Day 6 Guided tour of the Globe Theatre Built just 200 yards from its original site, London’s new Globe Theatre transports visitors to Elizabethan England. Those were the days when rowdy groundlings hurled rotten food at the actors to express their displeasure with a performance, and villains like Othello’s Iago were mercilessly heckled by the enthusiastic crowd. You might recognize this theater from the film, “Shakespeare in Love”. Crew members constructed an exact replica of the Globe to preserve the historical accuracy of the time period.

Thames Cruise Take a cruise down the Thames to the marker of zero-longitude. Having passed London’s more traditional landmarks, you arrive at this Victorian haven marked by the 1820s-style terraces. Home to the world’s oldest teaclipper, the Cutty Sark, Greenwich also boasts the National Maritime Museum and Royal Observatory. In recent years this part of London has become the starting point for the world’s largest participation marathon.

HARRY POTTER Warner Bros Studio

People the world-over have been enchanted by the Harry Potter films for over a decade. The wonderful special effects and amazing creatures have made this iconic series beloved to both young and old – and now, for the first time, the doors are open for everyone at the studio where it first began. You'll have the chance to go behind-the-scenes and see many things the camera never showed. From breathtakingly detailed sets to stunning costumes, props and animatronics, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides a unique showcase of the extraordinary British artistry, technology and talent that went into making the most successful film series of all time. Secrets will be revealed.

Overnight in London Day 7 Transfer to Newquay Travel to the seaside town of Newquay. With archeological evidence that dates back to pre-historic times, this town has a rich history. However, it is better known today as a major tourist destination. Around 22,000 people live in Newquay, but the population can increase to 100,000 or more in the summer.

Group Leader arranged activity Please see your Group Leader for details about today’s activity. No costs or entrance fees are included in your program fee. Many students choose to take a surfing lesson. The cost for this is £ 20 if you should choose to surf. The town is quaint and interesting with winding ancient streets filled with shops and a cove in which you can easily imagine pirate ships.

Overnight in Newquay -The Minervan Hotel Day 8 Visit King Arthur’s Castle Today, take an excursion to Tintagel. King Arthur fans can read The Wicked Day, The Once and Future King or Excalibur so they can memorize the legend of Camelot. However, for true appreciation of the Arthurian legend, they should flock to the stretch of the Atlantic Coast known as Tintagel. In August, 1998, a stone referring to King Arthur was uncovered at the ancient ruined castle. Explore the ruins of this 13th-century castle and, if you are ambitious enough, make the ascent up 100 rock-cut steps to visit Arthur’s Lair.

Overnight in Newquay - The Minervan Hotel Day 9 Transfer to Stratford via Warwick Castle

Your journey through the English countryside begins at Warwick Castle. Former home of Richard the Kingmaker, (a pivotal figure during the War of the Roses) Warwick is considered by many to be the finest medieval castle in England. Climb the towers and ramparts, view the treasures in the Great Hall or descend deep into the castle’s bowels for a look at the dungeon and torture chamber. But tread softly as you go—the castle is reputedly haunted by the ghost of Sir Fulke Greville, who was stabbed to death here by a servant in 1628.

Overnight in Stratford Day 10 Tour director-led sightseeing of Stratford “It is something, I thought, to have seen the dust of Shakespeare.” Discover what inspired Washington Irving’s famous words as your tour director shows you Stratford-upon-Avon where Shakespeare was born, raised, and buried. Step back into the Elizabethan age as you visit the half-timbered home in which the Bard was born, as well as the Anne Hathaway Cottage, a picturesque thatched farmhouse where Shakespeare’s wife spent her childhood.

Return to London This afternoon, after you return to London, you might choose to visit the National Gallery, which has over 2200 pieces on show. Admire pieces ranging from Italian Renaissance to late-Impressionism. For a more modern perspective, you might visit the Saatchi Gallery. Home of one of the world’s unparalleled contemporary art collections, the gallery has more than 1,000 paintings and sculptures, mostly by British artists.

Overnight in London Day 11 Guided Excursion to Windsor Journey to Windsor Castle for a guided tour of the Royal Family’s retreat. Founded by William the Conqueror in 1070, the castle has undergone many renovations over the last 800 years as each new monarch has added a tower here and a wing there. Legend holds that the castle’s Round Tower was built on the site where King Arthur sat with his Knights of the Round Table. Priceless objects reside in the State Apartments, ranging from paintings by Rubens and Holbein to Henry VIII’s sword and suit of armor. Also visit Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House and St. George’s Chapel, final resting place of many monarchs including Henry VIII and Charles I.

Dinner at the Hard Rock Café

Tonight, head to the original Hard Rock Café for dinner. Since its opening in 1971, over 12 million people have eaten at the restaurant and come to marvel at the rock-and-roll memorabilia.

Overnight in London Day 12 Transfer to the airport for your return flight Your tour director assists with your transfer to the airport, where you’ll check in for your return flight home. Itinerary is subject to change For complete financial and registration details, please refer to the Booking Conditions at www.eftours.com/bc.
