The world is not a very safe place to live in these days as disaster and terrorism can strike at any movement. Communication is the only relief in times of disaster and hence the need for an efficient disaster management system becomes imperative in public places and even in business establishments and important commercial joints where people move around in large numbers. Disaster might strike in the form of natural calamities, terrorists attacks and accidents. Thus an efficient disaster management system which will work in adverse conditions is needed. Disaster management crew must be well-trained and equipped with the best appliances which might help them to communicate the condition they are in and the status of the calamity in the region they work for. In times of natural calamity like floods, storms or fire, the usual mode of communication like phone, mobile etc., might not work or might become inoperative in the calamity. Underground communication lines get disabled due to flooding. Cell towers are blown over or simply choke due to high utilization, backup generators run out of fuel, or are filled up with water. This is where Ham Radio (Amateur Radio) comes into picture. Using HF (High Frequency) radio sets, messages can be coveyed or relayed to long distance. Really the old people are neglected in these busy days. In olden days most of the families are joint families. There is a lot of love and affection among all the family members. The youngers respect the elders. Everyone shows respect towards grand parents. Grand parents teach moral values to the youth from their experiences. Children like their grand parents. They would like to listen stories in their laps. But nowadays many are nuclear families. Today people are strive hard to make both ends meet, for giving their children good education, keeping up their social status and for their comforts. Man is always busy to earn more. He has no time to visit his family. There is a lack of love and affection among the children towards their relatives. Children addict to computer games and TV programmes instead of spending with their grand parents. We must learn to be grateful to our grand parents for giving us good education. They are like orphans in old age homes. So we should not leave them alone in their old age. We should bring them to our homes and serve them with good love and affection. Children should know their duty towards their parents. Then there is no need to send their parents to old age homes. X Class – ENGLISH – PAPER II

Hibernation is more than sleep. It is a very deep sleep. In warm countries, where the winters are not very long or very cold, hibernation is not necessary. And in very cold parts of the world, like the far north of Russia, not many animals hibernate; the ground is so hard that they cannot make a deep whole to spend the winter in. But animals in large part of the northern hemisphere spend. Every winter fast asleep. They go to sleep in all kinds of places. Red squirrels disappear inside trees, bears use caves, frogs go deep under the mud and very many animals dig tunnels in the earth. Some animals sleep under the snow, there is a lot of air in loose snow, and this helps to keep the cold out. Some warm-blooded animals like the cat, the dog or the wolf, do not need to hibernate. They lead an active life which keeps up their usual body temperature even in very cold winter weather. But for cold-blooded creatures such as a frog or a snake it is a different matter. When the air temperature drops too, it cannot move about in the usual way. And then it has no choice. It must simply lie down and sleep.

Bat, how are you ? Fine, how about you ? I am alright. But I am worried about my young ones. I am sorry to say that your young ones were killed and eaten by the Eagle. Oh ! I can’t believe it. The Eagle is my friend. He has promised me not to eat my young ones. Well, the Eagle doesn’t know which young ones are yours. I told him how to recognise my young ones. What description did you give him about your young ones ? I told him that my young ones were the most beautiful of all the birds with beautiful eyes and feathers. I think you are very foolish to say like that. Actually your young ones seemed to be ugly for the eyes of the Eagle. Why did you say to him like that ? Oh God ! I did a mistake. I should not have said that way. All this happened because of your boosting. Alas ! I have lost my young ones because of my foolishness.

Dear friend, How are you ? How are you preparing for the exams ? I am doing well here. I have prepared well for the exams with help of my parents and under the guidance of our beloved teachers. I expect a good grade in the final examination. The most important thing I would like to inform is about a movie that I have seen recently. It is “s/o Sathyamurthy”. It is an excellent movie. The hero in that movie performed well as a son of a beloved father. He was very responsible and sensitive. He is a perfect son. Everyone of us should also be responsible in the real life, like “s/o Sathyamurthy” in the movie. You also try to watch the movie and express your opinion. Shall I remain. I look forward to your reply. Tell my namaskarams to your parents on behalf of me. With love, Yours lovingly, xxxxxxxxxxx.

Nowadays Good movies are rarely produced. Many of the movies are commercial. They can’t be watched with all the members of a family. But the recent movie “s/o Sathyamurthy” is one of best movies released very recently. The director tried to attract all kinds and categories of people from the society. The story line was very good. The dialogue writer was very careful to include everthing decent. There is no vulgarity and exaggeration. The music is also upto the mark. The artists played their roles excellently and naturally. The photography and the screeplay are also good. The director Puri Jagannath took every care to make film super success with an arrogant hero Allu Arjun. Allu Arjun role as the son of Sathyamurthy is excellent and admirable. Films like these are the need of the hour, where the mass media is misleading the youth. Finally the movie is very good. It is recommended to everyone to enjoy the two and a half hours in a good cinema. 14. 1) 2) 3) 4) 5)

Once there lived a fisherman in a town. He was so poor that he was not able to get his daughter married to anybody. On the advise of a wiseman he deicded to visit the king of the town. He took a big fish and went to king’s palace. But at the palace gate, the gate keeper stopped him. He repeatedly requested the gate-keeper to allow him in and he said that he wanted to give the king a fish. But the gate-keeper did not accept and said the king wouldn’t want any fish and he wouldn’t buy. Then the fisherman replied that he wanted to give it as a gift. The gatekeeper said that though it was given as a gift the king would give some thing in return and said that he would allow him only if he agreed to give him half of whatever he would get from the king. After some dilly-dallying, the gate keeper agreed to the condition. Then he entered the palace and met the king. He greeted the king and said about the greatness of the fish he had brought. The King was pleased with his love for him and asked him if he wanted anything in return. At first the fisherman refused to take anything in return. But on being repeatedly requested by the king, he asked for two hundred lashes. The king was terribly suprised to hear such a reward. Then he requested the king to bring in the gate-keeper and to give him one hundred lashes and the remaining to himself. The king was again suprised at his strange wishes and asked for the explanation. Then he explained everything. The king became very furious and dismissed the gate-keeper and admired the farmer’s wisdom and rewarded him with two hundred gold coins.

Canditates appearing for the various competitive, university and Board examinations are many a good using computers. So many computers are processing examination results. In the launching of satellites, in general and sending them on the moon and other planets in particular, computers are being used extensively to control the flights. Present day information technology is wholly based on computers. Thus the computers have entered the daily activity of human life at every point. 2) An outcast of destiny is nothing but the baby who is in its last stage. The baby is abandoned by its parents there in the garbage bin. Though the baby is crying for help, there is on one to respond. Thus, the baby is an ‘outcast’ who is not accepted by the people and has been forced out of its home. There is no one who wants the baby. 3) The baby is taking a laboured breath. It is breathing in quick gasps. The baby has deep greenish blue coloured lips and sea-blue coloured nose and finger-tips. 4) ‘Easy rats’ means easily available rats. 5) Rats are gnawing at the baby’s ear. 6) I think that an unmarried young woman, who became a pregnant even before her marriage, might have abandoned the baby. 7) People usually abandon babies for the following reasons. a) If the baby is a girl child, some parents abandon it thinking that it is a burden. b) The poor people can’t afford to grow a girl child. c) If an unmarried young lady gets pregnancy before her marriage, she tries to get rid of ther baby. 8) The cat’s jumping into the garbage bin leads to a bloody choas. It jumps into the bin for catching rats. When the rats see it, they let loose a clicking squeak. They leave their food (the dead body of baby) and run away. 9) The only sin the baby has committed is ‘being born’ in this heartless world. The baby’s cruel parents leave it in the garbage bin without any love or affection for it. The baby might have felt pain to be born to those unkind parents. When the baby is crying bitterly for help, no one is responded and its cries go unheard. This also suggests that the only sin committed by the baby is being born in this world which is full of sins. 10) The foul smell that comes from disposed bacteria is adding to the confusion created by mosquitoes and insects. This ‘foul smell’ may be symbolically used by the poet to suggest ‘foul’ actions committed by man. 11. 1) It jumps into the garbage bin. 2) The cat jumps into catch rats. 3) The rats let loose when they see the cat jumping. 4) Yes. 5) Rats left the baby to the cat. 12. Description of the feelings of the gate-keeper after having been dismissed : Having been dismissed by the king, the gate-keeper may have felt terribly upset. He may have been shocked by this unexpected and sudden occurances. He should have felt repentant for what he has done. He should not have done like this being fully aware of the honesty and frankness of the king. Aaron an old fisherman, lived on the banks of a river, always dreaming of what he would do if he were rich. Oneday while walking home from work, his foot struck against a leather pouch filled with what seemed to him small stones. Absent mindedly he picked up the pouch and began throwing the pebbles into the water. “When I am rich,” he said to himself. “I’ll have a large house.” And he threw a stone. He threw another and thought “I’ll have servants and wine and rich food.” This went on until he had only one pebble left. As Aaron held it in his hand, a ray of light caught it and made it sparkle. He realised then, that it was a valuable gem. and that he had been throwing away the real riches in his hand while he dreamed idly of unreal riches in the future. All of us hold in our hands the power to enrich our lives here, and above all our lives in eternity if we use our time and talents instead of wasting them in idleness.

Read the following passage :

Our skin, hair and eyes contain a dark brown colouring material called melanin. The amount of this substance varies from person to person and the more one has of it, the darken is the colour of one’s skin and hair. The melanin is produced in the skin cells called melanocytes. The function of melanin is to absorb and there by protect the body from the burning effects of excessive ultra violet radiation present in sunlight. The sun stimulates the production of melanin in the melanocytes. That is why people become darker, if they spend too much time in the sun and why people living in the warmer regions of the world are darker than people living in the colder regions. If the body for some reason can not form melanin the individual will be an albino. Albinism can be partial or total. In complete albinism the skin of the whole body is pale pink, the hair is white and the iris of the eye is colourless. The eyes however appear pink as the colour of blind in the vessels of the back of the eye shows through the transparent iris and retina. Do you usually have dreams ? Are they good dreams or bad dreams ? Every night you dream four or five times between times of deep sleep. Usually you cannot remember your dreams. But sometimes, if you feel too hot or if you have a cold and cannot breath well, you might have bad dreams. They might give you a fright, but a bad dream cannot hurt you. During deep sleep, if you feel worried about something, your mind may cause you to talk. Most of us do this now and then. But some people do much more ! Perhaps you know some one who gets out of bed and walks around while sleeping. This should not be dangerous. Usually the person returns to bed. But one night, in England, a young football player had a bad dream. He shouted, then he jumped out of bed, ran through the room, jumped out of the window and fell into the garden eighteen feet below. About 300 words in English language came from the names of people. Sandwich is one of such word. You may know its meaning. A sandwich is made of two slices of buttered bread, with some meat or egg or vegetable put in between, you have perhaps eaten sandwiches. The word sandwich comes from the name of an English noble man, Lord Sandwich who lived from 1718 to 1792 he loved to play cards. Often he would spend many hours playing cards. Sometimes, he played day and night , for 24 hours. at such times he would not go home to eat. Someone would bring him meat and bread. But lord sandwich did not wish to stop the game even to eat. So he would put the meat between two pieces of bread. Holding this and eating he would go on playing. Soon other people began to do the same think with meat and bread. That was how the word sandwich came to be used in English. The word Boycott was first used in Ireland it comes from the name of an Irish landlord captain Charles C. Boycott.
