Computer Skills Evaluation Exam - Graduation Requirement Satisfy this requirement in one of three ways: (1) pass all three exam sections (Windows, Word, Internet/e-mail); (2) earn a C+ or higher in CS 9 Windows, CS 9A Word, and CS 9H Internet; or (3) some combination of the two. If you satisfy any portion of this requirement by passing a CS course, present a letter of waiver from the Testing Center to the Registrar. Transfer credit may also satisfy this requirement. Students entering with an associate’s or bachelor’s degree are exempt. For more information or to register for the exam, go to the Testing Center on the 4th floor of the Library Learning Center.
First Year Seminar - Core Requirement Take the following. Transfer students who enter with 24 or more credits are exempt. HEOP students who complete the HEOP summer program are exempt. Students in Honors will take HSM 25 and HSM 26.

English Composition - Core Requirement Take ENG 16 or 16X. Depending on your placement, you may be required to take ENG 13/13X and/or ENG 14/14X first. ENG 13X/14X/16X are for students whose first language is other than English, but they are equivalent to ENG 13/14/16. Completion of an X section satisfies that step in the sequence.

English Literature - Core Requirement Take two of the following. Prerequisite ENG 16 or 16X. Note: Though COS 50 is not a prerequisite, we strongly encourage English majors to take it first. Students in Honors will take Honors ENG 21 and 22. Taking both Honors literature courses, both Honors history courses, and both Honors philosophy courses will exempt you from ENG 16, COS 50, and the core literature requirement. Taking only one Honors literature course, one History, and one Philosophy will exempt you from ENG 16 only.
ENG 61 European Literatures I (3 credits) / ENG 62 European Literatures II (3 credits) ENG 63 American Literatures (3 credits) / ENG 64 Non-Western Literatures (3 credits)
Philosophy - Core Requirement Take the following. Students in Honors will take Honors PHI 21 & 22.

Foreign Language - Core Requirement Any student with knowledge of a foreign language may take an exam to be exempted from the requirement. You will receive no credit. For further information, contact the Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature. Otherwise, take the following (both courses must be in the same language). Students in Honors will take Honors SPA 21 & 22 or Honors FRE 21 & 22. (There are no Honors ITL offerings.)

Math - Core Requirement Take MTH 15 or 16. Depending on your placement, you may be required to take DSM 01 and/or DSM 09 first. If you place into DSM 01, you will take that course, then DSM 09 then MTH 15 or 16. If you place into DSM 09, you will take that course, then MTH 15 or 16. If your placement result is 10/16, you will take only MTH 15 or 16.

ENG 128 British Literature I (offered every fall, 3 credits) ENG 129 British Literature II (offered every spring, 3 credits) ENG 158 Literature of the United States I (offered every fall, 3 credits) ENG 159 Literature of the United States II (offered every spring, 3 credits) ENG 169 Non-Western / Post-Colonial Literature (offered annually, usually in fall, 3 credits) ENG 190 Senior Thesis in Literature (offered on demand, tutorial basis, 3 credits) Area Two Take four additional ENG courses numbered above 100 — with the following stipulations: ● ● ● ● ●
One must be in Creative Writing. Choose from 104, 164, 165, 166, 167 & 168. One must be in Writing & Rhetoric. Choose from 126, 163, 168, 171, 172, 173, 174 & 175. The other two may be from any concentration. The only way 168 can satisfy two different requirements is if you take it TWICE. Honors students may be able to count Honors electives (if taught by English professors).
Distribution Requirement Take two courses numbered 100 or above in one of the following subjects: Communication Sciences and Disorders, Foreign Languages and Literature, Philosophy, Humanities (includes Gender Studies), Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work. This requirement may also be satisfied by completing a second major or a minor in any subject (whether on the above list or not).

General Electives Take however many general electives you need in order to have a total of 128 credits (the minimum necessary for graduation. Note the following stipulations. ● ● ● ●
Forty-eight of the 128 credits required for graduation must be in courses above 100. Ninety-six of the 128 must be in the liberal arts and sciences. The final 32 earned prior to graduation must be completed at LIU Brooklyn. Fifteen of those must be in English.
