Entomopathogenic Fungi for Insect Pathology Workshop Instructor: Prof. Lawrence A. Lacey

Two five-day workshops will be presented by Prof Lacey who is renowned within the field of biological control of insects using entomopathogens. The workshop is designed to provide the student with the basic skills needed to isolate, identify, culture, preserve and assess the pathogenicity and virulence of entomopathogenic fungi. The workshop will include lectures on insect pathology with emphasis on fungi and bacteria along with laboratory demonstrations. Practical sessions to learn laboratory techniques will take place in 4-5 hour sessions each day of the week. Isolations of fungi from field collected insects, water, the phylloplane, and soil will be done with selective media and bait insects. Basic morphological identification of infected insects in the field will also be covered. Cultures will be used for identification, making clean cultures and conducting bioassays.
