Errata and Clarifications for The Cartoon Guide to Statistics Compiled by Bruce Weaver
In this document, I shall use CGS to stand for The Cartoon Guide to Statistics. Chapter 5: Missing Square Root Sign in Formula for σ In the middle of page 86, the authors say: NOW CALCULATE A NORMAL RANDOM VARIABLE X* WITH THE SAME MEAN np (25)(.5) 12.5 AND STANDARD DEVIATION np(1 p) 2.5. The formula for the standard deviation is missing a square root sign. The correct formula is: np(1 p). Finally, notice that the authors of CGS report the correct numeric value for σ (i.e., 25(.5)(.5) 6.25 2.5 ). So they obviously did take the square root when doing the computation, but just forgot to include it when showing the formula.
