This workshop draws on years of experience in classrooms to provide answers to teachers' most common questions about supporting English learners' language and literacy development in English speaking classrooms. During this workshop, attendees will be offered practical ideas, research-based tips, and classroom examples for supporting English learners during whole group, small group and independent work time. The workshop will begin with instructional modifications to maximize learning for English learners in grade-level contexts. The characteristics of English learners’ development and stages of proficiency will be presented with instructional ideas for differentiation. Practical strategies for scaffolding vocabulary, reading, writing, speaking and listening across will be presented with classroom examples. Assessment possibilities and considerations for identifying the differences between language proficiency, literacy proficiency, and developmental progress will be addressed. Drawing on the formal and informal assessments, ideas for effective instruction in reading, writing, listening, and speaking will be presented with model lessons, student examples, and classroom videos.

Dr. Moses is a highly sought-after speaker, staff-developer, and professional development residency provider. A former elementary teacher, Lindsey works with classroom teachers across the country supporting the implementation of effective literacy instruction in diverse settings. She is an assistant professor of literacy education at Arizona State University, and conducts ongoing classroom-based research on elementary literacy instruction in classroom settings with English learners. Lindsey brings her classroom and research experience together to provide practical, research-based instructional ideas for teachers in her two books, Comprehension and English Learners with Michael F. Opitz, and Supporting English Learners in the Reading Workshop. Lindsey is currently finish her new book with Meridith Ogden, What Are all the Other Kids Doing? Fostering Independence in the K-2 Reading Workshop.
