One of the striking features of Footstepsinthesand’s success with his first crop was how much it depended on broodmare daughters of Danehill. The combination notched up its first black-type performer when Walkinonthemoon was beaten only a neck in the Woodcote Stakes. Soon afterwards Chachamaidee finished third in the Albany Stakes and then the partnership came up with its first Group winner when Sent From Heaven won the Prestige Stakes. Another representative, Steinbeck, did very well to finish a close fourth in the Dewhurst Stakes on only his second start. Two of these four have continued to shine. Steinbeck became a Group 3 winner in Ireland before being sold to Hong Kong, where – as Pure Champion – he has run well at Group 1 level. The star of the quartet, though, has proved to be Chachamaidee, who has been so consistent that few begrudged her the stewards’ decision to promote her to first in the Group 1 Matron Stakes. To Footstepsinthesand’s credit, none of these Danehill mares was a black-type performer. Chachamaidee’s dam Canterbury Lace never raced. She was sold for 60,000gns at two but Chachamaidee’s exploits helped boost her price to 420,000gns in 2010. Canterbury Lace’s status had also received a boost in 2005, when her half-sister Virginia Waters won the 1,000 Guineas, and again in 2007, when her brother Alexander Of Hales was second in the Irish Derby. Chachamaidee’s second dam Legend Maker won the Group 3 Prix de Royaumont over a mile and a half and is very closely related to In The Wings, one of four Group winners sired by Sadler’s Wells from High Hawk, a daughter of Sunbittern. Legend Maker is by Sadler’s Wells out of High Hawk’s stamina-packed sister High Spirited. High Hawk and High Spirited were themselves closely related to the high-class middledistance mare Infamy (by Shirley Heights out of a daughter of Sunbittern); to the Derby winner HighRise (by a son of Shirley Heights out of a daughter of Sunbittern); and to Dubawi’s dam Zomaradah (by a son of Shirley Heights out of a granddaughter of Sunbittern). Sunbittern’s racing career began in great style, when she easily won her first three starts and finished fourth in the Cheveley Park. Unfortunately, she became temperamental at three.

After suffering seven consecutive defeats following his victory in the 2011 Golden Jubilee, Society Rock bounced back to his best to take a second Group 1, this time the Betfred Sprint Cup. Society Rock follows the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Samitar as the second northern hemisphere Group 1 winner of 2012 for Rock Of Gibraltar. Coolmore’s outstanding miler also has some promising two-year-olds to his credit, including the German Group 3 winner Ayaar. Interestingly, Society Rock and Samitar rank among a growing number of black-type performers by Rock Of Gibraltar with two lines of Danzig in their pedigree. Samitar is inbred 3 x 4, as is Society Rock, whose second line comes through his broodmare sire Key Of Luck, a grandson of Danzig. Key Of Luck, a three-parts-brother to champion sprinter Anabaa, showed a lot of speed at two, when he won the Group 3 Prix d’Arenberg. After being unable to race at three, he didn’t win again until he stepped up to a mile. He moved up the distance scale again after his transfer to the UAE, where he raced on sand. After carrying top weight to a 12-length success in record time over a mile and a quarter, he took the Dubai Duty Free by 20 lengths. Although his opportunities were initially limited, Key Of Luck sired the Group-placed Listed winners Wrong Key and High Society in his first crop before coming up with the top-class Alamshar and the Group-winning sprinter Miss Emma in his second. Society Rock is out of High Society, who was Group placed in Ireland before becoming a stakes winner over six and a half furlongs in the USA, where she was Graded placed over eight and nine furlongs. Wrong Key has also produced a talented performer to a son of Danehill, namely the smart Dansili colt Albaasil. 277 MOYGLARE STUD S G1 CURRAGH. September 9. 2yof. 7f.

Shareef Dancer SHAWANNI gr 93 Negligent

Tally-Ho Stud certainly received value for money in 2007, when it paid €78,000 for the broodmare Shawanni, in foal to Shamardal. Rising 15 years of age, the daughter of Shareef Dancer had reached the age where she either had to be sold or kept forever. Darley decided she should go. They had no reason to regret her sale when her first son by Shamardal realised only 9,000gns as a yearling, but that colt, Arctic, won the Go And Go Round Tower Stakes in 2009 to become Shawanni’s third stakes winner. His predecessors were Shanty Star (Queen’s Vase) and Hinton Admiral (Listed winner over six and seven furlongs). Tally-Ho received €70,000 for Shawanni’s second Shamardal colt, the useful sprinter Shropshire, and then another €75,000 for Shawanni’s 2010 filly by the stud’s Red Clubs. This filly, Sky Lantern, turned in an improved performance when she quickened impressively to land the Moyglare Stud Stakes, her third win from five starts. Her victory highlights the scale of the loss Tally-Ho suffered when Red Clubs died after only two seasons. The winner of the 2007 Sprint Cup had matured quickly enough to win the Coventry Stakes at two and he has proved a prolific sire of juvenile winners. His first crop contained a pair of two-year-old Group winners, including the tough Roger Sez, and his second has matched that feat. In addition to Sky Lantern, it features the Queen

Mary Stakes winner Ceiling Kitty. Sky Lantern has every right to be a top two-year-old. Her second dam, the Ahonoora mare Negligent, won the 1989 Rockfel Stakes so impressively that she was rated the year’s best juvenile filly. Although Negligent finished third in the 1,000 Guineas, her promise went largely unfulfilled as she managed only five starts. Negligent’s sister Ala Mahlik was fourth in the 1986 1,000 Guineas. 278 ROUND TOWER S G3 CURRAGH. September 9. 2yo. 6f.

For a Classic-winning miler whose dam Miesque was one of the standout milers of recent decades, Kingmambo proved remarkably versatile as a stallion. When his son Encke decisively ended Camelot’s Triple Crown dreams, Kingmambo was siring his second winner of the St Leger, following another Godolphin colt, Rule Of Law. He had also sired an Oaks winner, Light Shift, as well as mile-and-a-half Classic winners in the US (Lemon Drop Kid) and Japan (King Kamehameha). Then there were his numerous Guineas winners (King’s Best, Henrythenavigator, Russian Rhythm and Virginia Waters in England, Henrythenavigator in Ireland and Bluemamba and Divine Proportions in France). Divine Proportions also won the Prix de Diane. The only British Classic to evade him was the Derby but he has made amends via Workforce, by King’s Best, and Camelot, whose dam is by Kingmambo. The bottom half of Encke’s pedigree is also impressive. His dam, the Sinndar mare Shawanda, established a sequence of five victories in 2005, notably winning the Irish Oaks by five lengths and the Prix Vermeille. Now Shawanda’s threeparts-sister Shareta – by Sinndar out of Shawanda’s Listed-winning halfsister Shawara – has become the latest winner of the Prix Vermeille, a race which was also won by Sharaya, a half-sister to Encke’s third dam Shamsana.

114

Encke’s first three dams are daughters of Sinndar, Darshaan and Nijinsky – all three winners of the Derby in England or France. Although Sinndar hasn’t been a runaway success, he has supplied the runnerup in the Arc four times, three with Youmzain and once with Shareta. Three of his four Group 1 winners are fillies, as are eight of his 11 Group winners. See also notes on Shareta under race 245 in the October issue.

leading contender for Sadler’s Wells mares following the success of these mares with his sire Kingmambo. This combination produced six Group 1 winners, including Henrythenavigator, Divine Proportions, Virginia Waters and El Condor Pasa, King’s Best’s finest moment as a sire also came with a daughter of Sadler’s Wells, when he sired the Derby and Arc winner Workforce. Lockinge Stakes winner Creachadoir is another of King’s Best’s Group winners out of Sadler’s Wells mares and King’s Best also has Group winners from daughters of Barathea, In The Wings and Old Vic. His latest Group 1 winner, the Irish St Leger winner Royal Diamond, has a second dam by Sadler’s Wells. This much-improved six-year-old achieved little in three runs over hurdles during the 2011/12 season. Royal Diamond was bred by Moyglare Stud Farm, as were his first two dams, Irresistible Jewel and In Anticipation. With Danehill as her sire and Sadler’s Wells as her broodmare sire, Irresistible Jewel is inbred 3 x 3 to Northern Dancer. Perhaps this helped her develop into one of Danehill’s better stayers. She was third in the Irish Oaks after winning the Ribblesdale Stakes. Remarkably, 2012 has seen Irresistible Jewel’s Street Cry filly Princess Highway repeat those achievements. Mad About You, another of Irresistible Jewel’s daughters, was runner-up in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and Pretty Polly Stakes. Danehill also did well with another of In Anticipation’s daughters, the Listed winner Diamond Trim. Their daughter Profound Beauty was a Group 3 winner at up to a mile and three-quarters and was once a good fifth in the Melbourne Cup. Royal Diamond’s third dam, Aptostar, raced 20 times and numbered the Group 1 Acorn Stakes among her American successes. 296 NATIONAL S G1 CURRAGH. September 15. 2yoc&f. 7f.

Just five years after New Approach landed the National Stakes, his firstcrop son Dawn Approach triumphed in the same Group 1 contest, renamed in honour of the great Vincent O’Brien. New Approach, of course, later won the Derby, having failed by only a nose to defeat Henrythenavigator in the 2,000 Guineas. Although there are several parallels between father and son, including their trainer Jim Bolger, their unbeaten record in their first five juvenile starts and their purchase by the Maktoum family, jockey Kevin Manning doesn’t anticipate Dawn Approach staying as well as his father. New Approach tackled a distance as long as a mile and a half only once, in the Derby. His aptitude over shorter distances no doubt owed something to his keen temperament but also to the presence of some fast horses in the first four generations of his pedigree. For example, his broodmare sire Ahonoora was blessed with tremendous early pace. More speed has entered the equation where Dawn Approach is concerned. His broodmare sire, the top American sprinter Phone Trick, won nine of his ten starts, all over six or seven furlongs. Phone Trick went on to sire an unbeaten champion twoyear-old colt in Favorite Trick and a champion juvenile filly in Phone Chatter, plus sprinters of the calibre of Caller One, Intidab and Mazel Trick. Although Phone Trick is clearly an influence for speed, it is by no means certain that Dawn Approach will find a mile his limit at three. His next three dams are by Pleasant Colony (winner of two legs of the American Triple Crown), Alydar (runner-up in all three legs of the American Triple Crown) and Sea-Bird II (Derby and Arc). 297 PRIX DU PETIT COUVERT G3 LONGCHAMP. On his only appearance outside Germany, Girolamo was beaten nearly six lengths by Noble Mission and Encke in the Gordon Stakes but he was still good enough to land the Group 1 Preis von Europa two outings later. He represents another feather in

118

the cap of his sire Dai Jin, who was good enough to win the Deutsches Derby and another mile-and-a-half Group 1 race in 2003. Dai Jin also finished a respectable seventh in Dalakhani’s Arc and earned a Timeform rated him 123. Nevertheless, he has faced a constant uphill battle in a struggling German breeding industry. The son of Peintre Celebre has only 67 foals aged three or over in his first five crops and Girolamo is his fifth Group winner, which represents an impressive 7.5 per cent. His predecessors include the multiple Group winner Liang Kay. In becoming a Group 1 winner out of a Surumu mare, Girolamo has joined an exclusive club, its other members being Monsun, Lomitas, Hurricane Run and the Deutsches Derby winners Pik Konig and Lavirco. Girolamo’s dam Golden Time was 18 when she produced her first Group 1 winner. She had enjoyed plenty of previous success, producing four other stakes winners, including the Oaks d’Italia winner Goose Bay and the German 2,000 Guineas runner-up Gereon. Her five stakes winners all have different sires, so Golden Time is clearly an excellent broodmare. 313 DENNY CORDELL LAVARACK & LANWADES STUD FILLIES S G3 GOWRAN PARK. Sept 23. 3yo+f&m. 9f 100yds.

Caulfield on Siyouma: “The Sun Chariot winner is the second foal and second Group 1 winner produced by Sichilla, her predecessor being the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner Siyouni”

History repeated itself to some extent when Certify won the Fillies’ Mile. Like the 2011 winner Lyric Of Light, Certify kept her unbeaten record intact in landing her second Group victory and she too carries the Godolphin colours and is by a Darley USA stallion. But Certify was much more impressive than Lyric Of Light had been and there is good reason to expect her to develop into a leading three-year-old miler, in much the same way that Elusive Kate – another daughter of Elusive Quality – has done since becoming a Group 1 two-year-old winner. Certify cost John Ferguson only $80,000 as a yearling, even though Elusive Quality had stood for $75,000 when she was conceived in 2009. Her comparatively modest price is all the more surprising in view of the fact that her dam, Please Sign In, had already been represented by a two-year-old Group 1 winner in Cry And Catch Me (Oak Leaf Stakes in 2007). Perhaps Certify’s price as a yearling was held down by her being out of a daughter of Doc’s Leader. This son of the tough Mr Leader stood at the Nuckols family’s Hurstland Farm, the operation which also bred Certify and her first two dams. Doc’s Leader’s fee was only $1,500 in 1995, when Please Sign In was conceived. Doc’s Leader had been a tough performer. After finishing first or second in seven of his eight juvenile starts, he raced 15 times at three and a further 14 times at four. Although he never quite managed to win a Graded stake, he won six ordinary stakes races at up to nine furlongs. Please Sign In was tough, too. In a career fairly evenly divided between turf and dirt, she won seven of her 33 starts. She also built up a frustrating number of seconds at stakes level, including two in Graded stakes at five. However, Please Sign in is a greatgrand-daughter of Little Hut, a blue hen mare belonging to the Nuckols Brothers. Certify’s third dam, Lodge, was a half-sister to those excellent stallions Habitat and Northfields, as well as to the good filly Guest Room, the stakes-winning Hardware and the very useful Shack. Lodge herself had some wellknown descendants, led by the outstanding Prix du Jockey-Club and Arc winner Suave Dancer, who was out of another of her grand-daughters. 317 JOEL S G2 NEWMARKET. In the same month that the St Leger was won by Encke, a son of a Group 1-winning filly sold by the Aga Khan, the Sun Chariot Stakes provided a first Group 1 success for Siyouma, a filly sold by the Aga for €220,000 at Arqana’s 2011 December Sale. That price seemed fair enough for a very well-bred, lightly-raced filly who hadn’t been seen since she scraped home by a head in a Longchamp maiden race six months earlier. That victory was over ten and a half furlongs and her new connections have also raced her mainly over that sort of distance. However, it has been over a mile at Newmarket that Siyouma has put up two of her finest efforts. Siyouma’s sire Medicean is inbred 4 x 4 to Natalma and 5 x 5 x 5 to her dam Almahmoud. This made him an interesting match for mares by Danehill, a stallion inbred 3 x 3 to the same influential matriarch. The Medicean/Danehill partnership got off to a flying start with Nannina, winner

European Pattern of the Fillies’ Mile and the Coronation Stakes. More recently the cross’s representatives have included Siyouma and Sapphire, the latter also being an improved performer at four in 2012, when her efforts include a second to Izzi Top in the Pretty Polly Stakes. Siyouma is the second foal and second Group 1 winner produced by Sichilla, her predecessor being the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner Siyouni. Sichilla won two of her three starts, including the Listed Prix Amandine over seven furlongs. She is being given every chance, her mates in 2011 and 2012 being the halfbrothers Galileo and Sea The Stars. Sichilla’s half-brother Slickly won at least one Group race in each of his five seasons in training, notably taking the Grand Prix de Paris and Prix du Moulin. The next dam Slipstream Queen was very well bought for the Lagardere studs for $110,000 at Keeneland’s 1995 January Sale. She is also the dam of No Slip, a Group 2 and Group 3 winner on turf in California. Slipstream Queen is closely related to Procida, winner of the Prix de la Foret and the Hollywood Derby in 1984. Whereas Procida was by Mr Prospector out of a daughter of Carrie’s Rough, Slipstream Queen is by Mr Prospector’s son Conquistador Cielo out of the Group 1-winning Country Queen, another of Carrie’s Rough’s daughters. 321 CHEVELEY PARK S G1 NEWMARKET. Sparkalark did very well as a broodmare. In addition to Hartebeest, her daughters included the American Grade 1 winners Spark Of Life and Musical Lark, plus the dam of the Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Flash Of Steel.

Only two years after his daughter Hooray had made all the running to land the Cheveley Park Stakes, Invincible Spirit struck again with another all-the-way winner of this historic event. His latest winner, Rosdhu Queen, is now unbeaten in four starts and she had earlier emulated Hooray’s victory in the Lowther Stakes. Rosdhu Queen is the first Group 1 winner out of a daughter of Green Tune, a stallion who also had to wait some time for Group 1 success as a sire. After Lune d’Or became his first Group 1 winner in 2004, Green Tune enjoyed a fine autumn to his stallion career, thanks to Fuisse (2010 Prix du Moulin) and Zagora (2011 Diana Handicap in the US). Green Tune, winner of the 1994 Poule d’Essai des Poulains and 1995 Prix d’Ispahan, generally enjoyed more success with his fillies than his colts, with fillies accounting for eight of his 13 Group winners. Rosdhu Queen’s dam Green Minstrel was one of these Groupwinning daughters, her best success coming in the Prix d’Aumale over a mile at two. Green Minstrel was switched from France to the USA to continue her racing career, without much success. She started her broodmare career in Kentucky, where she was sold for $210,000 as an eight-year-old. Timeform’s assessment of Hooray as a three-year-old was “won at 7f, but best form at 6f.” A similar fate possibly awaits Rosdhu Queen, as she shows so much speed. It is worth adding that Fleeting Spirit, an Invincible Spiriti filly who was second in both the Lowther and Cheveley Park Stakes, proved to be a specialist sprinter. However, every one of Rosdhu Queen’s first four dams are by stallions which won over at least a mile and two of them are by outstanding mile-and-a-half performers. The four stallions involved are Green Tune, The Minstrel, Blushing Groom and Vaguely Noble. There is speed in this female line, though, as the Vaguely Noble filly Hartebeest was smart at around a mile in France. The source of the speed was probably Hartebeest’s dam Sparkalark, winner of the Sorority Stakes over six furlongs at two.

It has been more of the same in 2012. Although Shamardal’s only Group win in Britain or Ireland has been the Group 3 success of Dubai Prince, the Darley stallion has been in excellent form in other parts of Europe. His daughter Sagawara took the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary and he has had three Group winners in Germany, thanks to All Shamar, Amaron and Calipatria. Now one of those German winners, Amaron, has made a successful raid on the Premio Vittorio di Capua, to give Shamardal his second Italian Group 1 winner of the year, following Crackerjack King. Amaron is out of a grand-daughter of Danzig, a stallion who has played a sizeable role in Shamardal’s success story. His Group 1 Racing Post Trophy winner Casamento and his Group 3 winners Duel, Elle Shadow and Dunboyne Express are others out of mares by sons of Danzig. Amaron’s broodmare sire is the smart sprinter Bertolini, best known as the sire of the Cheveley Park Stakes winner Donna Blini. This mare has made an outstanding start as a producer in Japan, her Deep Impact foals being the dual Group 3 winner Donau Blue and the dual 2012 Classic winner Gentildonna. Amaron’s dam Amandalini, a halfsister to the smart American turf stayer Persianlux, cost 70,000gns as a yearling. She is inbred 3 x 3 to Northern Dancer. This inbreeding may be relevant to her producing a Group 1 winner, because she showed little ability and was sold for only 5,000gns after finishing in the rear in two starts. Amaron’s third dam, Tropicaro, won the Criterium des Pouliches.

In my notes on Zazou in the January 2012 issue, I commented that: “Shamardal could be said to have had a rather quiet time on the home front during 2011, his only Group winners in Britain and Ireland being the Group .3 winners Dunboyne Express and French Navy. However, it has been a very different story worldwide. He has had four Group winners in Germany (Amaron, Elle Shadow, Sommerabend and Zazou ), plus others in France (Casamento), Italy (Crackerjack King) and the US (Oregon Lady), adding up to an impressive northern hemisphere total of nine…. Shamardal finally scored his first Group 1 success of the year when the German-trained Zazou travelled to Italy to land the Premio Roma.”

Nahrain will always hold a special place in Roger Varian’s heart as his first Group 1 winner and he also gave the Newmarket handler his inaugural Grade 1 success in the Flower Bowl Invitational. Off the bridle a long way from home, she battled on gamely to collar Zagora close home, with fellow Newmarket raider I’m A Dreamer only a length adrift in fourth. Both British fillies now head for the Breeders’ Cup [BC] Filly & Mare Turf, in which Nahrain was second last year. They are set to clash with Marketing Mix, who was narrowly beaten by I’m A Dreamer in Chicago in August but franked that form with a dominant victory in the Rodeo Drive Stakes (which used to be called the Yellow Ribbon but, like many other Santa Anita events, has had its name changed). For once the home team will have a credible candidate for the BC Turf after Point Of Entry handled rain-softened ground surprisingly well to beat Aidan’s O’Brien’s Treasure Beach by a length and three-quarters and make it three straight Grade 1 triumphs in the Joe

Hirsch Turf Classic. The month’s other top turf contest was the Garden City Stakes, in which Samitar, who won the Irish 1,000 Guineas for Mick Channon but is now trained by Chad Brown, lasted out the nine furlong trip just well enough to touch off Somali Lemonade. With this year’s three-year-old crop ravaged by injury, Game On Dude must have every chance of improving on last year’s second place in the BC Classic, especially as it is held this year at his favourite venue of Santa Anita. With Chantal Sutherland jocked off in favour of Rafael Bejarano, Game On Dude reaffirmed his liking for the California course when landing the Awesome Again Stakes by more than three lengths. The Bill Mott-trained Flat Out, who was three places behind Game On Dude in the 2011 Classic, is set to reoppose after lifting his second straight Jockey Club Gold Cup with a head defeat of the front-running Stay Thirsty. Four weeks earlier, and over a furlong shorter, a more patiently-ridden

Stay Thirsty could finish no better than sixth behind Flat Out’s stablemate To Honor And Serve in the Woodward Stakes. Staying on the dirt but dropping back to six furlongs, The Lumber Guy returned from a four-and-a-half-month layoff to beat Caixa Eletronica by a length and a quarter in the Vosburgh Stakes and may now be aimed at the BC Dirt Mile. Earlier, Caixa Eletronica was a well beaten fourth in the Forego Stakes behind easy winner Emcee, who was giving the Godolphin operation its fourth top level success of the Saratoga meeting. Godolphin’s good run came to an end when Alpha, Questing and It’s Tricky all suffered reverses. Alpha performed dismally behind longshot Handsome Mike in the Pennsylvania Derby, while Questing and It’s Tricky both found one too good, albeit in very different styles. Questing came up against the unbeaten 2011 BC Juvenile Fillies winner My Miss Aurelia, who had missed most of this campaign with

injury, and was beaten by a head after an epic duel in the Cotillon Stakes. By contrast, It’s Tricky was completely outgunned by the defending BC Ladies Classic winner Royal Delta in the Beldame Invitational Stakes, suffering a nine and a quarter length drubbing. A fifth possible contender for this year’s Ladies Classic is Love And Pride, who was allowed to dictate soft early fractions en route to landing the Zenyatta Stakes by more than three lengths. Bob Baffert, trainer of Game On Dude, is dominating the juvenile division in California and his Executiveprivilege is likely to be a hot favourite for the BC Juvenile Fillies. Unbeaten in five starts, she got up on the line in the Del Mar Debutante but, with a furlong and a half further to travel, she took the Chandelier Stakes by six and a quarter lengths. Baffert’s male youngsters are pretty handy too, as Rolling Fog took the Del Mar Futurity and Power Broker lost his maiden status in the grandest of fashions in the FrontRunner Stakes.
