Schools 1925 to be used as a gymnasium . Much opposition by the eldeely folks was expressed against the building of the gym, saying, the building will be a "calamity hall" instead of a "community hall" where dances and so forth would be held. Despite the opposition the building was completed and ready for use in the school year 1926-27. In 1943 the school house was destroyed by fire, but not the' gymnasium. In order to complete studies for the school year, classes were moved to the gym, to property formerl y owned by ML and Mrs. Joe West, ·and to another dwelling house near the gym. Despite all the handicaps the faculty and students put out a school paper that was sent to the boys in service and to their parents. The new school house was built in 1945 .

EXETER SCHOOLHISTORY

The Exeter School was established in May 1885, on an acre tract IDeated on the corner of Front and

Locust streets near the present school building. In this same building the higher grades were known as the academy . After students finished the academy they were eligible to enter the Springfield school, now known as Southwest Missouri State University. After passing their examination they were given their license

to teach. One favorite teacher at the academy in 1890 was Prof. Madin. He mixed well with the community,

often visiting in the homes of his students and often enjoying fishing trips 'l'itQJhem. The school building was a wooden structure and was used until 1916 when it was destroyed by fire. Before the turn of the century the name of academy was dropped and it was called "The High School." No records are available, only pictures have been

ed by the elderly citizens of this area. After the original school buildi'}g was destroyed by fire in 1916 another building was erected and was ready for use by 1918. N. R. England was superintendent; only two years of high school instruction was available. Harry Talbert was superintendent from 1920 to 1922. Arthur Halser followed him as superintendent. At that time there was no closed campus-during the lunch hour students were free to go to town or wherever they wanted to go. In 1924 parents of the students agreed to pay $100 each to employ an extra teacher in order to have a full four-year accredited high school. Thro ugh 1924 and 1925 A. S. Bradbury was superintendent, principal was Tom Hodge, and the third teacher was D. A. Brown. Diplomas issued to graduates meas ured 10 '12 by 12Y, and were enclosed in a purple sheepskin lined with gold colored satin. Class rings cost $6.00. At least 4 of the 1925 graduating class were teache rs in the Exeter school system: Jessie Stephens taught before graduation; Bland Antle taught from 1928-29; Charles Via taught after he graduated from college; and during World War II, Ollie Trollinger taugh t in the Exeter school. The first community hall was built in Exeter in

Exeter students and their teachers are pictured November 15, 1897. 80

FIRST KINDERGARTEN AT EXETER SCHOOLS The first kindergarten class at Exeter Schools began in 1969 with Mrs. James Davis as beginning teacher. She resigned on October 31 and was replaced by Mrs. Glee Duncan with Mrs. Marcell Charles as teacher aid.

This house, located east of the school building, was purchased by the Exeter school system in 1957 from Mrs. W. O. (Maida) ScOIl. Thefirst kindergarten used the bO/lom floor of the house for their classroom. In 1977 the school built a new building and moved the kindergarten there. This house was then torn down to make room for a play area.

land approximately one quarter mile from the home site to start their heritage on. This is the same place Bob resides today, the old house that he and Luda started housekeeping in was moved to the back of the present dwelling house that became home to eight children. Troy L. of Exeter, Mo. Lois E. of Exeter, Mo. Helen (deceased) Lucille "Sapp" Williams, Augusta, Kansas, Ruth " Sapp " Brendlinger, Exeter, Mo., Amanda "Sapp" Cooper, Little Rock, Arkansas, Betty "Sapp" Thomas, Cassville, Mo. and Barbara "Sapp" Price of Springfield, Mo. There are eighteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Bob had been an active farmer and interested in the community of which he lived for all of his 85 years. He was a cattle buyer and shipper at the stock yards in Exeter back when the depression struck the country and a disaster hit the thriving little "City" and community, fire roared through the buildings literally destroying the entire town as it were. He worked for many years with the AAA in Cassville, Missouri to better the community around him, later he went into fertilizer business of his own still finding time to keep up with his Hereford cattle which he prizes greatly and a large amount of acreage, Luda, who passed away in 1957, was a wonderful help for such a man, one of the hardest working women who ever lived and a quiet and reserved woman, a loving and good mother would could go to the barn and milk four or five cows and work in the garden pulling weeds or hoeing, then return to the house and with the help of neighbor women or sometimes going it alone would throw a feast on the table for 30 to 40 thrashing hands 10 eat at noon. You never heard her complain although she was nor in good physical health most of the time.

This article was written about Bob Sapp when he was 85 years old. On a tract of land that had been homesteaded by Newt Sapp and his brothers some three and one half miles north of Exeter, a baby boy was born to Newt and Amanda Sapp March 12, 1889 they named him Clarence Raymond which came to be known as C. R . "Bob" Sapp thinking the R. stood for Robert. To the family tree were added three sisters Flossie "Sapp" Linebarger of Purdy, Mo. Lizzie "Sapp" Yarnell, (deceased) and Ina "Sapp" Bayless of Boyce, Idaho. Two brothers J. J. "Jim" Sapp (deceased) and Sanford Sapp (deceased). Bob grew up in the same community within one quarter mile of the old house he was born in, his folks built a new two story house approximately one quarter mile from the original modest dwelling they had constructed when first arriving at the property, you can see the two story house from the front porch of the home he had lived in for some sixty years. He had a meager education of only some three or four years. Mr. H. A. Bowman noted educator of this community once said of Bob, "Mr. Sapp has been an outstanding individual and built a landmark on a third grade education. It would have been interesting to know what he would have done had he been subjected to higher learning. " Well, who knows, but this one thing we are sure of, it might have made a richer man out of him, but not a better man, as his children we have all been proud to say yes he is our father. He was united in marriage to Luda Ethel Corn a beautiful raven haired, black eyed part Indian lass from the Rocky Comfort Community. They supposedly met at a church service when they were in their late teens. After a romance of approximately one year they were married. Father Newt was one of the old school that believed in giving your children a hand and gave them a tract of

Luda and Bob attended the church with their children at Calvary Baptist where the Sapp family had helped found and establish and were charter members. Bob is still a faithful member with four of his children who reside in the community. Bob is still quite a man at 85. His mind is alert and he is an interesting fellow to talk to. He can remember in detail most of the history of this area. Approximately 6 years ago he suffered a severe heart attack and then two or three smaller attacks. The doctors told the family he would never walk again, but due to the tremendous will to live and the will of God whom he has faithfUlly served all this time, he is still going, maybe not as strong as he would like to, but he is able to drive and see to his home. He has made his own landmark in Barry County and is still a monument there. Mr. Sapp died on May 21, 1980 171
