North Carolina State University Exposure to Biological Material Purpose: Use this diagram to initiate the appropriate steps if a concern arises regarding exposure to biological material at NC State University. Examples of biological material include organisms and viruses infectious to humans, animals or plants (e.g. parasites, viruses, bacteria, fungi, prions, rickettsia); recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid products, transgenic plants or animals, human and animal-derived substances (blood, body fluids, cell lines or tissues), arthropods that may pose a public health concern, and biologically active agents (i.e. toxins, venoms) that may cause disease in other living organisms or cause significant impact to the environment or community. If Biosafety Officer is not available, call 919-5153000 and provide the following information for immediate call back: • Name and contact number • Nature of concern
If contamination has occurred to an open wound or to the eyes, nose or mouth, immediately flush/wash the affected area for at least 15 minutes or until help arrives.
