University of Michigan Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Position in Next Generation Transportation Systems The University of Michigan’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position in the general area of Next Generation Transportation Systems. This is a critically important research and teaching area as national and global challenges in transportation mobility, safety, and sustainability emerge. It is also a preeminent theme for the University of Michigan and the State of Michigan. The tenure/tenure-track position is expected to be filled at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. However, exceptional candidates will be considered at the rank of Professor. Applicants shall have a doctorate in engineering or related field of study, and those applying at the Associate Professor or Professor levels must have a well-established academic record, including scholarly publications and an externally funded research program. The intellectual depth, innovation and promise of the candidates are of higher priority than their specific research areas. Some areas of particular interest include innovative methods of observing, modeling, forecasting, and controlling the behavior of next generation transportation systems, connected and automated vehicle systems, innovative transportation sensor development and deployment, and big data applications in transportation. Other areas of transportation science and engineering will also be considered, but candidates with strong core fundamentals that allow them to work across disciplinary boundaries are strongly encouraged. Applicants will additionally be evaluated on their vision and potential for teaching within the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at both an undergraduate and graduate level. The successful candidate should also establish an active research program. Multidisciplinary research collaboration is encouraged. In particular, the selected candidate will have the chance to collaborate with researchers in the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), and to take advantage of UMTRI’s first class laboratory facilities including the Ann Arbor Connected Vehicle Test Environment and the newly constructed Mobility Transformation Center’s simulated urban environment for testing connected and automated transportation systems. Interested individuals should submit their curriculum vitae, statements of research interests and teaching philosophy, copies of representative research publications, and contact information for five references electronically in a single pdf file to: [email protected]. All other inquiries may be directed to Dr. Henry Liu ([email protected]), Faculty Search Committee Chair. Applications are requested by December 1, 2014 when the committee’s selection process will begin. However, applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The University of Michigan is a premier public university with top-rated Engineering, Medical, Law and Business programs, and is responsive to the needs of dual career families. The University of Michigan is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
