abo ut o ur s pea ker In 2011 Mark Schlissel was appointed as the 11th Provost of Brown University. Until July of that year he was UC Berkeley’s dean of biological sciences in the College of Letters & Science. Schlissel joined the UC Berkeley faculty in 1999 as an associate professor in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, and became a full professor in 2002. He was appointed dean of biological sciences in July 2008. He has served as a member (2002-2004) and then Chair (2004-2006) of the NIH Immunobiology Study Section and continues to serve as member of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s (HHMI) Scientific Review Board. Schlissel was elected to the prestigious American Society of Clinical Investigation in 1998 and has been a member of the American Association of Immunologists since 1992.

Rabbi Bernard Mandelbaum was president of the Jewish Theological Seminary from 1966 to 1971. After being ordained in 1946, he held a variety of posts at the Seminary, including Dean of Students, Provost and Professor of Midrash, or scriptural interpretation, before becoming president under Rabbi Louis Finkelstein, chancellor. His major scholarly work was a critical edition of the “Pesikta deRav Kahana,” a work of biblical interpretation dating to the Fifth Century. RSVP to
