2 Brainerd Community Education • Fall 2017

Welcome Welcome to the Brainerd Community Education

Fall Guide! As summer fades to fall, I often wonder where the time went. How is it possible for those long, lazy days to be over so quickly? How can it be time already for back-to-school shopping, pumpkin flavored everything, homework, and leaf raking again? The question of how it can be this time already is especially heartfelt and befuddling this fall as the Reynolds family sends new students to kindergarten and high school. Lest I get too lost in the nostalgia of summer’s little kids who have suddenly grown into fall’s big students, this new season of weather brings with it some exciting changes around the Community Education department. Last spring we wished happy trails to two beloved retiring long-time staff and this fall we welcome the wonderful people who have taken over, as well as a new face in a new position. Next time you stop into or call our office at Forestview Middle School, you will be greeted by new secretary Cylinda Ring. She is so friendly, helpful, and easy to talk to, you will forget that she is new to our department. Now at the helm of our Adult Basic Education program is teacher Jessica Turner. She has spent the last several years teaching at Lincoln Education Center. Her enthusiasm and excitement for working with adults who need a GED, are learning English, are preparing for college, or are looking to brush up on basic skills is contagious. Find out more about the programs she is coordinating on page 31. Maureen O’Connor will be filling our newly-created Youth Development Coordinator position. You will notice that this issue is a little light on youth activities. I am confident Maureen will remedy that very soon. Find out more about her on page 5. To celebrate all the exciting changes around the office, we decided to add a bit of new color to these pages. Get yourself a pumpkin latte, maybe a few pumpkin cookies, light your pumpkin candle, and enjoy our selection of fall activities for every member of the family. In partnership for life-long education,

Cori Reynolds Director of Community Education

4 Brainerd Community Education • Fall 2017

New Staff Meet the New Youth Development Coordinator Maureen O’Connor

This fall, Community Education will welcome Maureen O’Connor to the team. Maureen will be working to continue the great activities we offer for youth and develop new ones. Read below for more about her. Where did you grow up and go to school? Growing up in Plymouth, MN, I have great memories from my childhood of the cool, fun community education opportunities that I was involved in. Following high school graduation, I ventured into the “real world” in a unique way: by spending a few years with a service organization in Mazatlán, Mexico before beginning college. I later graduated from Metropolitan State University in St. Paul with an Individualized Bachelor of Arts in Child & Family Counseling Psychology. Where are you currently working? For the last few years, I have been the Volunteer Services and Seasonal Recruitment Coordinator for True Friends, an organization that runs camps, travel, weekend programs, and horse therapy for adults and children with disabilities. At the beautiful Camp Courage location in Maple Lake, I had the chance to serve thousands of clients, involve hundreds of teens in youth development and leadership volunteer programming, and recruit high quality young adults to spend their summers working with our incredible campers. What are priorities for your work with Brainerd Community Education? I eagerly anticipate connecting with and serving the families of the community. By engaging with children and teens, getting to know the needs, desires and goals of parents, and partnering with educators I plan to implement new and continued strategic initiatives that engage students in fun, intentional ways. My goals for programs involve emphasizing service to those around us, experiential learning, outdoor recreation, and healthy social development. Specifically, I want to get to know YOU. I want to get to know the youth that bring energy and vibrancy to our school district, their unique strengths and struggles, their passions and pressures. I want to get to know the parents and caregivers who are investing themselves into the development of each student. I want to provide programs that support the school life and home life of each individual who joins in. I want to provide opportunities that are adaptive, inclusive, and embracing of all needs and unique abilities. My gratitude for this opportunity is immense. I look forward to serving you. What do you like to do outside of work? I enjoy owning a few horses and a very active dog who are always keeping me outside and moving. Anything involving being in the woods, on a lake, exploring or being under the sun and stars is likely a hobby of mine! In the winter, you can likely find me on a broomball rink or bundled up on the back of a horse riding through the snow. I’m looking forward to returning to the Brainerd area and the many “friends that are like family” that I have here. I’m also one to try new recipes, bake up delicious treats, and gather people together for meals. Maybe my new co-workers will get to benefit from my kitchen experiments!

Stop by the Community Education office at Forestview Middle School beginning September 11 to welcome Maureen!

To complete the classroom portion of the program, students will meet three times per week on Mondays, Tuesday, and Thursdays for three hours each day. On the last day, a State Examiner from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety will administer the written test required for a drivers permit. Interested in joining the ECFE Parent and Teacher Organization (PTO)?

The ECFE PTO is an organization designed to represent expectant parents and parents of children birth to pre-kindergarten as citizens of the Brainerd School District and to strengthen and support families as they care for and grow with young children. Our goal is to provide a framework for coordinating fundraising and volunteer efforts. All ECFE parents are encouraged to join the PTO. Membership is a terrific way to meet other parents with similar interests and goals. To learn more about the ECFE PTO call 218-454-5430. Follow us on Facebook (Brainerd ECFE) for updates on ECFE programming and other upcoming events.

Current immunization records must be faxed or dropped off before ECFE classes start. A family cannot start class until an immunization form or a conscientious objector waiver form is submitted.

Early Childhood • Screening CALLING ALL 3 & 4 YEAR OLDS!

Benefits of Screening

Early Childhood Screening and Kindergarten Registration

•Helps you find out how your child is doing and answers parenting questions

Brainerd Public Schools regularly offer early childhood screening clinics during the school year for all children between the ages of 3 and 5 years. The state of Minnesota recommends this at age 3 and requires this for kindergarten entrance. Early Childhood Screening is a quick and simple check of how your child is learning and growing. The screening includes a developmental assessment, vision and hearing tests, height and weight measurement and an immunization and health history review.

•Connects you to early childhood programs and other community services

The purpose of this FREE screening is to identify children who may need additional time and experiences to be ready for school. The sooner we get started, the more likely your child will begin school with the necessary skills to succeed. Appointments are available throughout the school year.

•Registers your child for kindergarten Appointments are available throughout the school year.

Three reasons to screen at age 3: 1. Screening can assist your child to be ready for school. 2. Any health or developmental concerns can be found earlier and help can be provided sooner. 3. Because screening is free, it’s easy, and it’s good for your child! *Kids going to Kindergarten Fall 2018… Please take the time to have screening complete by January 2018!

To schedule a screening appointment, call 218-454-5430

WHO ARE WE?

Community Education is an opportunity for local citizens and community schools,

agencies and institutions to become active partners in addressing education and community concerns.

WHAT DO WE DO?

Community Education brings community members together to identify and link

community needs and resources in a manner that helps people to help themselves improve the quality of life in their communities.

HOW DOES THE COMMUNITY BENEFIT?

Community Education is a unique education concept that enhances these beliefs: •Education is a lifelong process; everyone in the community-individuals, business, public and private agencies-shares responsibility for the mission of educating all members of the community; and •Citizens have a right and a responsibility to be involved in determining community needs, identifying community resources and linking these needs and resources to improve their community.

WHAT DO WE ACCOMPLISH?

Community Education results in:

•A responsive education system and an improved learning climate in the schools; •Efficient and cost-effective ways of delivering education and community services; •Broad-based community support for schools and other community agencies; •An emphasis on special populations, such as at-risk youth and minorities; and •Collective action among all educational and community agencies to address quality of life issues.
