#FAM God’s Family Builds Up The Lead In: 1. Let’s Review a. Church is something you belong to. We are the family of God! b. The Church must be Unified if it truly desires to glorify God. c. The Church must love with Agape, just like God does. We must love with selfless goodwill, benevolence, and willful delight in others. d. For God’s Family to live out its mission, the Church must rediscover humility. 2. Let’s talk about the word Edify a. What does Edify mean? i. “ Improve someone morally or intellectually.” b. What’s the opposite of Edify? i. Insult? Manipulate? Suppress? c. What is easier to do Edify or “AntiEdify”? Why? i. It takes all the other areas we’ve talked about to truly be a Christian that edifies. We must belong to the family, be unified in glorifying God, love with agape, and have a character of humility. 3. The Bible clearly implores us to edify each other! a. “...make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister… make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.” Romans 14:13, 19 b. “The role of the _______ is to help people pay attention to God and respond appropriately.” Eugene Peterson i. What word belongs in the blank? Eugene Peterson said “pastor.” I’d like to make the case that it should be “christian.” Edification doesn’t stop with the Pastor. God’s Family should always help each other be soldout Jesus worshippers, bent on fulfilling Jesus’ mission here on earth.
#FAM God’s Family Builds Up The Main Event: 1. How can we live a life that edifies? a. “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2 i. What kind of burdens do you have right now? 1. Chances are the person next to you has burdens much like that. b. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Ephesians 4:29 i. Define unwholesome talk. How sweet are your words? c. “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11 i. Would Paul look at you and say, “just as in fact you are doing?” d. “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,” Hebrews 10:24 i. How good of a cheerleader are you? e. “Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.” 1 Peter 4:9 i. How tightly do you hold onto your things? f. “Greet one another with a holy kiss.” Romans 16:16 i. Wait… what does this have to do with edification? A kiss of greeting was a sign of mutual brotherly affection. It showed a relationship that was a step past passing acquaintance, but instead close family or friendship. Do we view our church family the same? Or do we view them with contempt? The Last Word 1. So what’s the point. a. Time to write your own application. Now that you’ve learned what the Family of God is supposed to be like, what is God telling you to change about yourself and your character? 2. Further Reading: a. Revelation 21 If the Church is supposed to help Jesus create His kingdom here? Learn what that kingdom looks like.
